“So, what do you do?” It’s a question we all get asked, but for Meridianites it’s a question without an easy answer. Every project at Meridian is unique, and while we believe there’s strength in our unique approach to the work, it also makes it hard to sum up what we do in an elevator pitch (especially if that elevator is only going a couple of floors!). We often say, “We are a mission-driven, nonprofit consultancy,” but what does that mean? To us, it means we’re committed to helping our partners improve lives, the environment, and the economy. For over 25 years, individuals, businesses, government entities, NGOs, and more have relied on us to help them tackle complex environmental and social issues. We bring a fresh approach to our partnerships—whether we’re providing strategic advice, incubating a new organization, facilitating contentious dialogue, or designing a multi-year collaborative. We co-create spaces where participants feel heard and invested in finding solutions and crafting a shared vision. We want there to be enough buy-in on that final vision that the people at the tables we’re facilitating feel empowered and motivated to execute that vision in the real world. Learn more about our unique approach to the work by visiting our website: https://lnkd.in/dpnQPmyD. Meridian’s Frontline Delegation members participated in all corners of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), including those pictured here at the “High-Level Interactive Dialogue on Sustainable, Resilient and Inclusive Agri-food Systems”. Esther Penunia, Alberto Broch, Sara Omi, Richard Kachungu, and Aissatou Oumarou were on the panel, each sharing their own perspectives on what must be done to maintain and manage land in a sustainable, healthy way. Kachungu, in front of a full audience at the Action Dome, supported by the frontline leaders standing behind him, spoke about the knowledge and value youth bring to this issue. “Young people are critical to achieving the Riyadh Action Agenda’s vision. These young people, especially those in rural and Indigenous communities, have knowledge focusing on long-term solutions. Therefore, it is imperative that investments are [put] towards them. It will allow us to be able to transition and scale [an] innovative, people-centered approach," said Richard Kachungu. #COP16Riyadh Learn more about the Delegation! https://lnkd.in/gssJk6dC

We can’t believe it’s been one year since Meridian’s Frontline Community Delegation attended COP28 in Dubai! https://lnkd.in/g_WB98gM Now, a year later, we are privileged to bring many of our frontline leaders back for #UNCCD #COP16Riyadh, the Rio Convention focused on combatting desertification. From Uganda, Australia and Brazil to Ecuador, Philippines and Poland (and more!), this diverse group offers rich perspectives on #farming, #soilhealth, #agrifoodsystems and #regenerativeagriculture. Delegation members Bonnie Jupp, Hakim Baliraine, and Juan Carlos Jintiach shared their thoughts at a panel event put on by IUCN, moderated by Pascale Bonzom with closing remarks from Meridian's own Tara Shyam, Director of Regen10. "Working alone will not take us anywhere. The challenges we are facing are impacting all of us – from the consumer to the farmer,” Hakim Baliraine stated. The Delegation remains dynamic and continues to grow. More great reflections from #UNCCD #COP16Riyadh from another one of our Delegation members, Bonnie Jupp! 👏
Feeling inspired and hopeful upon my return from the UNCCD COP16 in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. I was invited to speak at two events representing RegenWA Perth NRM and WA Landcare Network Inc 🌱Advancements in Soil Health and Land Restoration Monitoring, where I was asked specifically about Natural Capital Accounting and how it can be used to scale up improving soil health. Leigh Winowiecki facilitated a rich discussion. 🌻 IUCN Regen10 Common Ground film screening, farmers and indigenous peoples panel discussions. Here I had the opportunity to share RegenWA’s bread and butter, what activities we undertake to support Western Australian farmers to implement regenerative practices that support soil health. The UNCCD Front Line Leaders (the delegation I was in) participated in the high level interactive dialogue, “Enabling environment to catalyse the transformation towards sustainable, resilient and inclusive agri-food systems” Here, our colleagues provided feedback, insights and expertise to help build the Riyadh Action Agenda. The Riyadh Action Agenda is a global platform, powered by the UNCCD COP16 Presidency, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, mobilising ambitious commitments and action from state and non-state actors in support of government commitments, to conserve and restore 1.5 billion hectares of land by 2030 – helping deliver a prosperous future for all. Ambition Loop Re-thinking and transforming agri-food systems will play a key role in supporting these critical global goals, creating triple wins for people, nature and the climate. For WA, that means a collective impact approach to effectively use funds to amplify the great work being done, and using demonstrations, case studies and toolkits for knowledge sharing/story telling to apply on-ground action at catchment scales. With farmers, youth, women and First Nations voices at the decision-making tables. So good to catch up with Carolyn Hall and Chris Inskeep from Mulloon Institute who have been participating in multiple panels to share the amazing work they are doing to restore landscapes across Australia. Grateful for Alejo Maggini Melissa Pinfield and the team at the Meridian Institute and Regen10 for their support 🙌💫 #UNCCDCOP16 #Riyadh2024 Coalition of Action 4 Soil Health (CA4SH) Ambition Loop UN Convention to Combat Desertification COP16Riyadh Hon. What a profound honour it was to deliver the closing intervention from the frontline perspective, representing Young Emerging Farmers Initiative (YEFI) at the High-Level Interactive Dialogue on Agri-Food Systems Day at COP16 in Riyadh. Sharing a frontline perspective during the session, "Enabling Environment to Catalyze the Transformation Towards Sustainable, Resilient, and Inclusive Agri-Food Systems," was both a privilege and a responsibility. Joined by fellow frontline Changemakers and Indigenous Peoples, My intervention highlighted the critical pillars of the Riyadh Action Agenda (RAA). I emphasized securing land rights for local and indigenous communities through strong policy frameworks, enabling them to lead sustainable restoration efforts. Equally vital was advocating for inclusive governance and equitable access to financial resources, particularly for young farmers, to build resilient communities and drive sustainable development. 💬 A call to unity and collaboration echoed throughout my message. To transform agri-food systems, partnerships across sectors and borders are indispensable. The dialogue was enriched by the presence of remarkable speakers and thought leaders. The session opened with an inspiring intervention by FAO Goodwill Ambassador for the NENA Region, Her Royal Highness Princess Basma bint Ali of Jordan, setting a transformative tone. The panels that followed, expertly moderated by Raissa Okoi and Gonzalo Munoz, brought forward groundbreaking insights. Reflecting on these dynamic discussions, it’s clear that global collaboration, innovative financing, and inclusive policies are key to achieving sustainable, resilient, and inclusive agri-food systems. Together, we have the power to transform the world, one community at a time. 🌱 Thanks to the Meridian Institute 🙏🏾 #COP16 #AgriFoodSystems #Sustainability #InclusiveDevelopment #RiyadhActionAgenda #YEFIisAwesome

Food Day COP16Riyadh sees agriculture and food systems take centre-stage during UNCCD #COP16 with the launch of the Agri-Food Systems component of the Riyadh Action Agenda (RAA). The RAA is a global platform to mobilise ambition, commitments and action from governments and non-state actors to conserve and restore 1.5 billion hectares of land by 2030. Action Area 3 of the RAA focuses on the need to promote sustainable, resilient, and inclusive agri-food systems by improving soil health, fostering inclusive land-scape level approaches, repurposing public support, and supporting a holistic and equitable food systems transition. Regen10 is pleased to be included as a partner initiative, with our Outcomes-Based Framework offering a farmer-centric, multi-stakeholder guiding star that integrates social outcomes - alongside economic and environmental - at farm and landscape levels. We are working with a wide range of food system actors to drive forward a holistic approach which can support farmers in the transition toward regenerative. Our Director Tara Shyam, as well as Regen10 partners, are on the ground in Riyadh speaking to the case for regenerative food systems. Together, we can achieve a food systems transformation that benefits our landscapes, our people, and our planet.
