🚀 Featured Publication - "Gut Microbiota Interactions in Multiple Sclerosis: The Role of SCFA-Producing Bacteria and Dietary Fiber" 👩🔬 First Author: Lucinda Toppen 👨🔬 Last Author: David Kleinschmidt 🗞 Full Publication: https://mtbln.co/gfdg1x Today’s featured publication sheds new light on how gut microbiome composition, particularly Short Chain Fatty Acid (SCFA)-producing bacteria, may influence autoimmune conditions like multiple sclerosis (MS). Using an experimental MS model, the study shows that colonization by certain gut bacteria, such as L. reuteri, can significantly reshape the gut microbiome, leading to a reduction in beneficial SCFA-producing species—crucial contributors to anti-inflammatory responses in the body. What’s interesting? The research demonstrates that restoring SCFA levels in MS may not only depend on dietary fiber but may also require targeted modulation of the microbiome itself. Findings like these broaden our biological understanding and advance our efforts to unravel the complexities of this multifaceted autoimmune disease. #Metabolomics #MicrobiomeResearch #AutoimmuneDisease #MultipleSclerosis #GutBrainAxis #Microbiota #ShortChainFattyAcids

🌎 Metabolon’s 2024 Annual Volunteer Day! In honor of Giving Tuesday, the Metabolon team took time to give back to our communities, showing the impact we can make when we come together with purpose. This has become a yearly tradition for the Metabolon team – We have remote teams volunteering in their local communities and larger teams partnering with community support groups near our HQ in North Carolina. From food banks to clothing donations, we were grateful to pause, connect, and contribute side by side. Giving Tuesday celebrates global generosity and reminds us that our collective efforts, big or small, make a lasting impact, and the impact extends far and wide. A huge shoutout to the following organizations for making this possible, and for their incredible work, making a meaningful difference in our communities! 🍂🦃 Happy Thanksgiving! 🦃🍂 This holiday, as you dig into your turkey, don't forget to thank tryptophan! It's the essential amino acid found in turkey that supports mood and relaxation. Tryptophan helps your body produce serotonin, a key neurotransmitter that promotes feelings of well-being and happiness. Not only does it support a positive mood, but it also plays a role in producing melatonin, the hormone that regulates your sleep cycle. So as you enjoy your holiday meal, remember that tryptophan is helping you feel cozy and content, from your mood to your rest! 🧡 Learn more about tryptophan: https://mtbln.co/jebn4y Cheers to good food, good health, and a peaceful holiday! 🥧✨ #Thanksgiving #Tryptophan #Metabolites

🌍✨ Unlocking Health Insights with Metabolomics and the Exposome! ✨🌍 We’re excited to share this study from The University Medical Center at Rotterdam that dives deep into the impact of long-term air pollution exposure on the blood metabolome. This research highlights the critical role of metabolomics in understanding how environmental factors shape our health. Why is this important? Metabolomics provides a snapshot of metabolic changes in the body, offering insights into the biological effects of environmental exposures. By exploring the exposome, which comprises the totality of environmental exposures, we can better understand their influence on health and disease. Read the full article to explore how these findings can pave the way for improved strategies to tackle large public health challenges: https://lnkd.in/dCrWUgmE #Metabolomics #Exposome #PublicHealth #EnvironmentalScience #RotterdamStudy

🚀 Featured Publication- 'Machine Learning Metabolomics Profiling of Dietary Interventions from a Six-Week Randomised Trial' 👩🔬 First Author: Afroditi Kouraki 👩🔬 Last Author: Ana Valdes 🗞 Full Publication: https://lnkd.in/eJwxn3uD What can machine learning contribute to metabolomics-led interventional studies? Quite a lot, actually. For today's featured publication, we're proud to say our very own Dr. Greg Michelotti and Dr. Kari Wong are listed among the co-authors. In this study, machine learning techniques have been applied to analyze metabolomic data from a six-week randomized trial, providing an in-depth insight into how dietary interventions impact human metabolism. This research represents an exciting step forward in combining data science and biology to explore how what we eat profoundly influences our health. 📦 Find more microbiome resources here: https://lnkd.in/e2pDWQzW 🗞 Abstract: Metabolomics can uncover physiological responses to prebiotic fibre and omega-3 fatty acid supplements with known health benefits and identify response-specific metabolites. We profiled 534 stool and 799 serum metabolites in 64 healthy adults following a 6-week randomised trial comparing daily omega-3 versus inulin supplementation. Elastic net regressions were used to separately identify the serum and stool metabolites whose change in concentration discriminated between the two types of supplementations. Random forest was used to explore the gut microbiome's contribution to the levels of the identified metabolites from matching stool samples. Changes in serum 3-carboxy-4-methyl-5-propyl-2-furanpropanoate and indoleproprionate levels accurately discriminated between fibre and omega-3 (area under the curve (AUC) = 0.87 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.63–0.99]), while stool eicosapentaenoate indicated omega-3 supplementation (AUC = 0.86 [95% CI: 0.64–0.98]). Univariate analysis also showed significant increases in indoleproprionate with fibre, 3-carboxy-4-methyl-5-propyl-2-furanpropanoate, and eicosapentaenoate with omega-3. Out of these, only the change in indoleproprionate was partly explained by changes in the gut microbiome composition (AUC = 0.61 [95% CI: 0.58–0.64] and Rho = 0.21 [95% CI: 0.08–0.34]) and positively correlated with the increase in the abundance of the genus Coprococcus (p = 0.005). Changes in three metabolites discriminated between fibre and omega-3 supplementation. The increase in indoleproprionate with fibre was partly explained by shifts in the gut microbiome, particularly Coprococcus, previously linked to better health. #metabolomics #lipidomoics #multiomics #machinelearning #aiinscience #microbiome #metabolites
