  • A new workforce housing complex in Miami Beach for artists, city employees, first responders, nurses, hospitality workers, teachers, entertainers, and veterans is officially opening next month. The Anamar at Collins Park, located at 224 23rd St., is an 80-unit apartment building that was built on public land under the impression that it would be affordable for workers in the City of Miami Beach. However, the units are not exactly being offered at a discount compared to current Miami Beach market rates. The building's leasing site reveals that studios, which are no more than 486 square feet, start at $2,385, whereas junior one bedrooms, ranging from 481 to 513 square feet, are listed at $2,554 per month. The two-bedroom, one-bath units start at $3,063 and the floor plans range from 695 to 807 square feet.  The $41.7 million development by workforce housing development firm Servitas received a $5.85 million loan from the city and $4 million through the city's cultural bonds program.   • After 50 years of serving the Coconut Grove community with fresh veggie sandwiches and healthy bites, the Last Carrot must relocate come November. According to Coconut Grove Spotlight, Coral Gables-based developer The Allen Morris Company is slated to knock down the tiny strip mall located at 3133 Grand Ave., the home of the Last Carrot, to build a five-story, mixed-use office building with retail space, offices, and residences, which will range from $2.5 million to $8 million. The large tower will sit along Grand Avenue from Matilda Street up to the parking lot where the U.S. Post Office is located. The developer has given the lunch spot a deadline of November 1 to move from its current location, according to the publication. And this strip mall isn't the only building getting demolished on the block. A slew of single-family homes will be knocked down to build a three-story structure, as well. Read the full story below:

  • Gabriel Alcala's art is difficult to mistake — his lines are clean, his colors striking, and his illustrations arresting, often marked by a touch of dark humor. The Miami-based artist's work has been featured in the New York Times, stretched across skateboard decks, and adorned the cover of Father John Misty's To S. / To R. single. Now, Alcala has lent his talents for a merch collab with New Times, for which he's designed two uniquely "Florida" pieces. Both were inspired by his experiences living in the state. Alcala says he aimed to create artwork that evoked the essence of Miami to those intimately familiar with the city. "I wanted to create one illustration that was distinctly Miami and another that was more subtle," he says. "I was surprised and pleased when [New Times] decided to use both illustrations." The merch is available now to New Times members. Those who contribute at least $20 will receive a limited-release commemorative poster with one of Alcala's designs.   • There was a time when going out in Miami meant the party itself was enough to lure clubgoers. It didn't matter who was on the bill — the DJ would spin in a dark corner of the venue anyway. One of those parties was POPLIFE. Founded in 1999 by Barbara Basti, Aramis Lorie, and Ray and Paula Milian, the bash was one of Miami's most celebrated events, attended by Gen Xers and millennials looking for a playlist filled with Britpop, indie rock, dance rock, postpunk, and synthpop gems. Poplife continues to exist today as a marketing and event agency, with Aramis Lorie, the sole founder, still on the team, but it certainly hasn't forgotten its roots as one of Miami's OG hipster parties — or what Zoomers now call "indie sleaze."   • A small French bakery hidden in a South Miami warehouse has become such a mecca for artisanal croissants that it is receiving national attention. Just six months after New Times featured Casa Bake in a viral story, its golden and buttery-flaked croissants have earned national recognition. Restaurant publication the Infatuation has named the South Miami bakery among its 11 picks for the best croissants in the U.S. "The warehouse bakery is whipping up some insanely light and flaky plain croissants," the Infatuation writes, praising Casa Bake's $3.50 classic croissant and recommending them for dipping in the bakery's cappuccino. The publication also noted the rare combination of high-quality pastries and accessible pricing. "Honored to be mentioned as one of the best croissants in the country," Casa Bake posted on Instagram, receiving congratulatory messages from customers praising the recognition as "well deserved." Followers flooded the comments with excitement and praise; others celebrated with applause and heart-eyed emojis.
