One of the best parts of building a company from the ground up is that you get to design the team of your dreams from scratch. We make it a priority to invest in talent at every stage of their careers, which means inevitably we'd celebrate our very first retirement! Cheers to Jon Mckinley, who we toasted last week for his four years of creating scalable solutions in our IT department. Thank you for letting #MisfitsMarket be a part of the final chapter in such a wonderful career. Looking for your next big move? Check out our Careers page and come find your fit with us! https://lnkd.in/eX3zHhDE

We have celebrated many things over the past 5+ years at Misfits Market, but today was a first - we get to celebrate our first Misfits retirement! The biggest thank you in the world to Jon Mckinley for 4 years of incredible contributions to our company. Jon joined us in mid 2020. We were adding new team members every week, we had almost no IT infrastructure, and we were juggling Covid chaos. Jon moved quickly and deliberately (one of our core values at Misfits) to create scalable IT solutions across the organization - most of these are still intact today and serve as a foundation for technology at Misfits (including things like the Jonny Cart - our mobile warehouse management cart). Jon was never short on fun stories and life lessons. At his retirement party yesterday, he left us with a few more wise words: "Never try to lift up a cow by yourself, be careful of potholes when driving a motorcycle, and work at companies with kind people." 😁 Jon - as you move on to enjoy your well-deserved retirement, know that your legacy will continue to inspire us. Now it is finally thyme to relax! Thank you and happy retirement!

Good news travels fast! Check out this recap of another amazing Food Waste Solutions Summit organized by our friends at ReFED. They assembled the best and brightest in the industry, including our Head of Sustainability Rose Hartley, to share insights and reimagine food loss and waste reduction strategies both upstream and at the consumer level.

The ReFED Team has done it again! Last week’s #FoodWasteSolutionsSummit in Baltimore was reinvigorating and inspiring. Here are some of the standout moments, and personal highlights: 🔊 Secretary of Agriculture Thomas Vilsack announced the National Strategy for Reducing Food Loss and Waste and Recycling Organics. This long-awaited strategy charts a course to the US commitment to reduce food loss and waste by 50% by 2030, including new investments. The strategy covers prevention of food loss, prevention of food waste, increasing organics recycling, and policy to incentivize all three areas. Read all about it here: https://shorturl.at/lfssC 💡 As always, Dana Gunders delivered an insightful, inspiring keynote address. She drew parallels between the growth of energy efficiency and our collective work in food loss and waste, emphasizing that rising demands can be mitigated by creating efficiency measures that help plateau consumption. 🗺 A food waste & loss “cheat sheet”! Eva Goulbourne of Littlefoot Ventures, in collaboration with FMI- The Food Industry Association, hosted a brainstorming and planning session for the Food Waste Reduction Alliance. Eva created a comprehensive "Cheat Sheet" detailing the primary stakeholders working to reduce food waste and loss in the U.S. and beyond. This is the sort of resource that I wish I had when I started in this field six years ago. 💡 Measurement -> Awareness -> Behavior Change. Harry Tannenbaum, founder of Mill, shared early findings showing that Mill customers are changing and improving not just their at-home waste habits, but their purchasing habits, e.g. purchasing fewer would-be-wasted foods. It's a great reminder that what's measured, matters (and it's important to make the measurement easy - or better yet, automatic!) 🤝 Workshop: Mapping Solutions, Bridging Gaps in Food Waste Reduction. I had the pleasure of facilitating a workshop with Nia D'Emilio, led by Selena Mao, to audit the current ReFED solutions to food waste, and assess ongoing needs. It was a pleasure to work with retail grocery colleagues including Natasha Tofil and Kaity Robbins who are leading work to reduce in-store retail waste. We even pitched an solution to make it easier to divert waste in grocery stores :) ❤️ The incredible ReFED Team. The team has grown substantially since last year’s Summit and continues to do the work our whole ecosystem relies on: researching, reporting, and advocating for food waste reduction in the U.S. Thank you for galvanizing us, and providing a moment for us all to get organized, energized, and reinvigorated so we can keep saving food from loss and waste. "Move Quickly and Deliberately": it's one of our core values and it's the fuel behind our food rescue strategy. So when a Chicago-based grocer recently closed its doors, we mobilized to build a partnership with an innovative distributor, Pod Foods, who helped reroute items from 15 trending snack and beverage brands to our store. Starting this week, #MisfitsMarket customers can discover 35 new favorite foods that previously had an uncertain fate—and brands can rest easy that their products found a great home. Check out the story over at Modern Retail of how Senior Category Manager Jessie Kimsey lived our core value and worked with Dan Rabens and Peter Gialantzis at Pod Foods to help fold these emerging brands into our rapidly expanding our assortment.

We're celebrating two years of our private label, Odds & Ends! From humble beginnings with a handful of pantry basics, to a full line of snacks and kitchen staples, we’re constantly working to expand our offering and reduce food waste. Give our blog a skim to see how Odds & Ends has helped us move raw ingredients “up” the Wasted Food Scale—we’ve got the numbers to prove it.

Since day one, we've designed our business to be deliberately different. Misfits Market is the only nationwide grocer that actively partners with farmers and manufacturers to save food from waste—to the tune of 500,000 pounds of food (on average) that we save from a lesser outcome each week. Our mission is to reduce food waste and make shopping for sustainable, high-quality groceries easier and more affordable for all customers. Our dedication to #StopFoodWaste has big ripple effects: it also helps us avoid wasting water and carbon emissions. In fact, we're mindful of resources at every level of our business, from our Zero Waste Initiative in our fulfillment centers to our Packaging Return Program and efficient last-mile delivery. ICYMI, check out our first-ever Impact Report (and visit our blog for a whole lotta ways you can reduce food waste at home, too).

When Imperfect Foods joined the #MisfitsMarket family, we pledged to increase our #impact together. Now on #EarthDay, we have proof of that promise: We just published Misfits Market’s first-ever Impact Report! Some of the biggest moments from 2023 are captured in this report, including the food, water, and emissions our customers helped us save, the TRUE Zero Waste Gold certification of our Clackamas, Oregon facility, the packaging we collected for recycling and reuse through our Packaging Return Program, the impact we’ve made through our private label items, and so much more. We’re proud to be deliberately different in everything we do, from sourcing to delivery—and it’s all thanks to the contributions of our amazing team. Check out this wrap up from Progressive Grocer 👇

Reimagining the food system goes way beyond our own grocery platform. Today we announced that we’re opening up our unique supply chain to Gopuff to power the on-demand delivery app's new Fresh Grocery offering. Misfits Market is supplying more than 300 items, including fresh fruit and vegetables, dairy, meat, bread and more, allowing us to rescue even more food together. This is just the start as we continue to leverage our purpose-built infrastructure to power the perishables industry. “We’ve always had, I think, this long-term view that the operational infrastructure in the supply chain that we have built, specifically around perishable products, is a core competency,” our Founder and CEO Abhi Ramesh told PYMNTS. “They are something that a lot of other companies don’t have but want. … We are, in a sense, building the Amazon for perishables.” Reach out to wholesale@misfitsmarket.com to learn more! #supplychain #perishables #groceryindustry #d2c
