Traditional wisdom meets seismic resilience in the #ancient technique of Flat Stone construction. This method, characterized by stacked flat stones measuring approximately 15 to 40cm in length and 2 to 4cm in thickness, has demonstrated its effectiveness in earthquake-prone regions. The walls, typically 40 to 50cm thick and 2 to 3m high, are bound with locally sourced mud mortar, creating a sturdy structure that can withstand significant seismic activity.  ▸Flat Stone #construction demonstrated superior performance during earthquakes compared to round stone masonry. While some damage occurred, primarily in the form of roof collapse and cracking along mortar joints, the interlocking nature of the flat stones helped prevent complete structural failure. This resilience is particularly noteworthy given the technique's simplicity and use of readily available materials.  Let's embrace this knowledge from the past to build resilient futures for communities in seismic zones worldwide. 🔆 #ConstructionMethod #AltlasMountains

A climate-driven exodus is reshaping our world. By 2050, 1.2 billion people—equivalent to 3X the population of North America—could be uprooted from their homes, and 53% of all these #displacements are due to climate-related disasters. 🏢 Climate migration leads to increased #urbanization, signifying that infrastructure is critical to accommodate growing populations. Ensuring resilient cities requires: ▫️Robust building codes and enforcement systems ▫️Climate-resilient infrastructure planning ▫️Support for vulnerable communities ▫️Institutional capacity building 🔆Implementation In Action: In Dhaka, Bangladesh, we established an Urban Resilience Unit, implemented the developed Electronic Construction Permitting System (ECPS) across 8 zones, assessed over 5 million square meters of critical infrastructure, and trained 200+ professionals in resilient construction practices—a comprehensive effort through technical systems and human capacity. As #COP29 unfolds, let's remember that climate action isn’t about promises—it's about the tangible changes we make today. 📖 "Lessons on resilience from a year of global earthquakes" by Kit Miyamoto, Ph.D., S.E., Olivia Nielsen, Ommid Saberi, and Guido Licciardi: https://lnkd.in/gUdZ35S9

🌊📉Disasters disrupt private sector growth and profitability – so private companies need to be part of an all-of-society approach to reduce disaster risks and build resilience. To foster public-private collaboration and encourage businesses worldwide to take proactive measures in preparing for and mitigating disaster risks, UNDRR has launched a Network of Corporate Chief Resilience Officers (CCRO). 🌐 "This network will accelerate the integration of disaster risk reduction into business models, ensuring that resilience is at the core of companies' decision-making," said Kamal Kishore, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction. ➡️ https://ow.ly/KhF750UaW7Q

    • States alone cannot address
all the drivers of disaster risk.
We need the private sector
to play a leading role
and be part of the solution
to reduce the vulnerability
and exposure of communities
and economic sectors
to disasters.

We are proud to have contributed to crucial climate action discussions at #COP29! Prioritizing disaster risk reduction when integrating #technologies into climate-resilient #infrastructure projects for our communities must be a top priority as we face the challenges of a changing world. ➡️In Greater Jakarta, Indonesia, the USAID/BHA-funded Urban Communities for Resilient Action (KUAT) is leading a risk awareness and preparedness activity through social media. 92% of residents in KUAT's work areas were unaware they lived in an earthquake-risk zone. ➡️Young scientists and journalists uploaded a video on YouTube about the Baribis fault, which garnered over 1 million views in 5 months. This led to increased community awareness and disaster risk reduction in Greater Jakarta. As we explore new technologies and their roles in disaster risk reduction, we are guided by a safer, better future for all! We thank the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure for leading these conversations. Elizabeth Petheo, MA, MBA Rave Aulakh #COP29Azerbaijan #Baku #MiyamotoInternational #CDRI #DRR
