Southern Illinois University, Carbondale students and other volunteers are stepping up to remove non-native invasive species! The Touch of Nature Outdoor Education Center is contending with 3,300 acres of outdoors full of plants introduced by humans, and crews have spent the last eight years working to give native species the space to flourish. “When we remove the invasive species, it allows the native plants and animals to function the way they were designed to in the natural environment,” said Charles Ruffner, forestry professor. To date, the project has covered 150 acres, focusing on main camp sections and areas along the roadways. https://lnkd.in/gHqRQVyM Photo credit: SIU Board of Trustees, Southern Illinois University #Conservation #ConservationEducation #Plants
