NACWG exists to advise the First Minister on what’s needed to tackle gender inequality in Scotland
About us
The National Advisory Council on Women and Girls (NACWG) was formed as a catalyst for change, addressing gender inequality by providing independent strategic advice to the First Minister. With all recommendations made during Phase One accepted by the Scottish Government, Phase Two NACWG is pushing forward the implementation of these systemic changes, with a focus on accountability, implementation and participation, to ensure the delivery of recommendations not only shapes policy development but also influences the system as a whole.

As 2024 comes to a close, we're reflecting on the NACWG's progress. This year, we hosted an impactful accountability event, a successful Circle event and published our Phase Two report on the first two Focuses of Scrutiny. Our continuous engagement with the Scottish Government has been crucial, and in July, we announced our Third Focus on Scrutiny. Thank you for supporting us on this journey as we look forward to the strides we'll take in 2025. #NACWG #YearInReview #GenerationalEqual #GenderEquality

Our recommendations are presented through the themes of leadership, accountability and creating conditions. These themes highlight the collective power of our recommendations in guiding us towards meaningful change for women and girls in Scotland. By focusing on strong leadership, ensuring accountability and fostering the right conditions, we believe we can create a more equitable and inclusive society for all. In Scotland, many people think that access to reproductive healthcare is a settled issue, however, Lucy Grieve from Back Off Scotland found that this is not the case for those accessing abortion care. After a conversation with a close friend with lived experience which left her feeling frustrated and angry, the two women decided they didn't want anyone to be made to feel that way. Find out about their four-year campaign to secure safe access zones around all medical facilities providing abortion care across the country on our blog: https://lnkd.in/eQixqSHa #NACWG #GenerationEqual #GenderEquality #BlogPost

The NACWG was created to change the status quo and redistribute the power. At our Accountability Event earlier this year, NACWG member Amanda Amaeshi spoke to us about how we are helping bring the views of marginalised women and girls to the table. #NACWG #GenerationEqual #GenderEquality #Accountability

Inequality is not inevitable. Making Rights Real works alongside communities experiencing human rights issues, especially those marginalised by laws, policies or public authorities. "We know that we can use human rights to change systems, which is why Making Rights Real has implemented a human rights-based approach to ensure that human rights are not hidden from the rights holders." We are now more than halfway through NACWG Phase Two and have been reflecting on how much progress has been made. But our continuous improvement approach means that we’re continually learning about what’s working and what we need to adapt. Research Scotland were commissioned to deliver an independent evaluation, identifying key learning points and where improvements can be made. Find out more about the key findings and how we’ll be using these to continue to push for change over on our blog: https://lnkd.in/eEycfS9b #NACWG #GenerationEqual #GenderEquality #IndependentEvaluation

The NACWG's Third Focus of Scrutiny is exploring recommendation implementation through the lens of social care, childcare, and unpaid care. The NACWG and Empowering Women Panel are currently engaging with The Scottish Government on the Third Focus of Scrutiny and findings will be shared in due course. The focus of Phase Two NACWG is on ensuring that our recommendations from Phase One deliver meaningful change for the women and girls who need it most. We've convened the Empowering Women Panel which has an equal role in shaping Phase Two, scrutinising recommendation implementation, and informing delivery. These women and girls see directly the consequences of policy design and implementation that does not consider them, nor meet their needs.
