Our Vision: Lead the industry in standards and solutions for the common good.

About us

The National Council for Prescription Drug Programs (NCPDP) is a not-for-profit American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Accredited Standards Developer (ASD) consisting of more than 1,500 members representing entities including, but not limited to, claims processors, data management and analysis vendors, federal and state government agencies, insurers, intermediaries, pharmaceutical manufacturers, pharmacies, pharmacy benefit managers, professional services organizations, software and system vendors and other parties interested in electronic standardization within the pharmacy services sector of the healthcare industry. NCPDP provides a forum wherein our diverse membership can develop business solutions, including ANSI-accredited standards and guidance for promoting information exchanges related to medications, supplies and services within the healthcare system. NCPDP has been named in federal legislation, including HIPAA, MMA, and HITECH. NCPDP members have created standards such as the Telecommunication Standard and Batch Standard, the SCRIPT Standard for ePrescribing, the Manufacturers Rebate Standard and more to improve communication within the pharmacy industry. Our data products include dataQ®, a robust database of information on more than 80,000 pharmacies, resQ™, an industry pharmacy credentialing resource, and HCIdea®, an innovative prescriber database that provides continually updated information on more than 3.7 million prescribers. NCPDP's RxReconn® is a legislative tracking product for real-time monitoring of pharmacy-related state and national legislative and regulatory activity. • Did you know that the first portable rescue inhaler for asthma was a cigarette? No really. Before the invention of nebulizers and inhalers to deliver medications like antihistamines, bronchodilators, and corticosteroids, people relied on herbal interventions to ease what was, and still is, a very common, bothersome, and often dangerous respiratory issue. Examples from ancient China, Egypt and India display the use of burning medicinal plants to create a smoke that would then be inhaled to soothe respiratory disorders, usually via an earthenware vessel and a hollow tube to direct the fumes. Enter Dr. Rudolph Schiffmann, who after completing a year of military service in the Civil War, set up as a Throat and Lung specialist in St. Paul, Minnesota. Among several patented remedies, Dr. Schiffmann eventually gained a patent for “Asthmador” in 1893. Advertisements for the treatment proclaimed “Asthmador [powder] or Asthmador Cigarettes will give instant relief usually within 10 seconds, but always within 15 minutes” with a money back guarantee! The product was manufactured and sold through the early 20th century until the 1960s, when it was removed from circulation after several poisonings were linked to the brand. (Fun fact: two of the main ingredients in this relieving agent were stramonium and belladonna, both dangerous poisons when ingested instead of inhaled.) Although we have come a long way and are now fortunate to have much safer and more reliable medicinal relief for asthma and other respiratory disorders at our fingertips, that would not be the case without the dedicated hard work, experimentation, and innovation of the countless pharmacists who came before and paved the way. Keep an eye out for more of these features from the collection of over 700 items on display at NCPDP’s Scottsdale headquarters. Thank you to the R. Ken Coit College of Pharmacy for loaning these items to NCPDP!

  • 🎁 Happy Holidays from us at NCPDP! Earlier this month NCPDP staff came together to celebrate another successful year, enjoy a day away from our computers, and give back to the community. This year, working with The Foster Alliance - Arizona Helping Hands, we built 50 skateboards for foster children in need. These skateboards are available to foster parents living in Arizona to help them support the children they have taken into their homes. We also assembled 50 necessities bags for Shoebox Ministry, who provides the bags to those in need of basic toiletries and a caring note – each bag had a handwritten note from someone on NCPDP staff!   Our greatest asset is our people – the staff who dedicate their time to supporting NCPDP initiatives, the members who volunteer their time to lead within NCPDP, and the industry professionals who share their expertise. Thank you for your support over the past year. We hope you have a relaxing and memorable holiday season!
