After the Presidential elections, the blame game quickly began, with some pointing fingers at the immigrant rights movement for the Democrats' defeat. This echoes the history of those who tried to derail progress in past social movements, whether it was the abolitionist, women's rights, or civil rights movements. We have not only been blamed and scolded by those who should know better, but told variations of “tone it down, go away, and be happy with your lot.” But as Dr. King once reminded us “Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle." The article below stands as a rebuttal to such accusations. And in the coming weeks and months, as immigrants face brutal and unprecedented attacks, we will all be thankful that there is a movement that tirelessly fights for justice on behalf of some of the most marginalized members of our society.

I lived in the Fiji Islands as a teenager and it was there – far, far away in the South Pacific, that I discovered the comedic genius of Cheech and Chong. My friends and I watched "Up In Smoke" countless times and each viewing brought tears of laughter. So it was with great joy and admiration that I sat in on a Cheech Marin interview conducted by my colleague Victoria B. last week. Within minutes he had us laughing. Mr. Marin’s humor was matched only by his thoughtfulness, poignancy and deep connection to his Latine roots. At National Immigration Law Center, we are proud to have launched our culture and narrative change work. At a time when Latines and immigrants face demonization and attacks we are doubling down, committed to changing hearts and minds by proudly sharing our stories.
