Transforming environmental science. Accelerating discovery. Generating solutions.
About us
The National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS) at UC Santa Barbara is a center for transformational science focused on accelerating discoveries in environmental science and informing solutions that will allow people and nature to thrive. Founded in 1995, we were the first synthesis science center of its kind, and we continue to lead in the practice of analyzing existing data through collaboration and open science.

Shifting our diets to be more sustainable can be a powerful tool to individually combat climate change and food insecurity 🌾However, are there cascading environmental and human welfare impacts of these large-scale changes in food demand? According to UC Santa Barbara researchers, the answer is yes. "The research was motivated originally by the question: Whose consumption is generating the pressures of food production that are being felt by people and places around the world?" said Joe DeCesaro, data analyst at UC Santa Barbara’s National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS). Today, the NOAA RESTORE Science Program and National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS) are excited to announce the third Request for Proposals for the Gulf Ecosystem Initiative. The goal of this initiative is to fund synthesis research that works to understand the Gulf of Mexico ecosystem in a holistic manner. Awards will support working groups and postdoctoral researchers pursuing pressing and innovative research questions on three emerging themes in the Gulf of Mexico: climate change, fisheries, and ecological impact of management actions. Working groups will communicate with experts from Gulf communities and will be encouraged to consider local knowledge when developing research questions. Proposals are due by March 15, 2025. Visit nceas.ucsb.edu/gulfeco for details. #GulfofMexico

Thank you National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS)! I’m thrilled to announce that I’ve just completed the CoreR course with the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS)! 🎓 This data-centric program sharpened my R programming skills, with a strong focus on ecological data science, and introduced me to essential workflows for research, data visualization, and statistical analysis. 🌿📊 CoreR provided hands-on training, allowing me to explore advanced data manipulation techniques that I can apply in my current role as a Water Resource Analyst. Whether it’s groundwater data modeling, water quality trends, or broader environmental datasets, I’m excited to implement these new skills in ongoing projects! What made this experience even more rewarding was the opportunity to connect with so many bright and motivated young professionals. The instructors were fantastic, and the cohort was full of passionate individuals from diverse backgrounds. I’m grateful for the knowledge shared and the connections I made! If you're interested in enhancing your R programming capabilities, I highly recommend checking out the CoreR course! 💡 👉 Explore the program here: https://lnkd.in/gtaZYaKP #DataScience #RProgramming #WaterResources #EnvironmentalScience #NCEAS #CoreR

Our National Science Foundation (NSF) Cyber2A project just hosted its first, weeklong, in-person workshop on #AI! Last week, 20 Arctic researchers gathered in Santa Barbara, CA, to dive into using AI and machine learning (ML) in their research. The workshop covered a wide range of topics, including AI fundamentals, AI-ready data, data annotation, neural networks, deep learning, AI ethics, reproducibility, and more. Developed by nine instructors from four institutions, the training materials were a truly collaborative effort and are now publicly available on our project website. We're enhancing these step-by-step resources with lectures and code to support self-paced and lifelong learners worldwide. Visit our site for updates, and stay tuned for our 2025 training!
