This week is Dyslexia Awareness Week, and I want to take a moment to talk about the power of stories. Dyslexia is something close to my heart, as it is in my family, and stories are a huge part of our lives. Stories are a way in. They’re a way to process, understand, and connect. For those with dyslexia, it’s not just about reading or writing; it’s about processing the world differently, and stories can be the gateway to that understanding. Listening to audiobooks, looking at pictures, having stories read to you, or even your parent making up stories about you—these are all ways to engage with the world. For anyone navigating dyslexia, or supporting someone who is, remember that stories in all their forms are a powerful tool for growth and connection. If you are interested in consuming stories in a more sensory way, you can find my 5 day Sensory Story challenge here: https://lnkd.in/eWNbpUdA It's absolutely free and you will receive an ebook with all 5 tasks inside so you can choose when and how quickly you can work through them. Happy Dyslexia Week 😊📚 #ThePowerOfStories

  • Tackling tough questions can be a tricky one, but being honest with your neurospicy kids is vital!

This morning, we’re off to a funeral, which got me thinking about how we approach difficult conversations with neurodivergent children and teenagers. In my experience, it’s so important to give straight, honest answers—especially to the tough questions. My rule at home has always been: if my daughter asks a direct question, I give a direct answer. This is particularly important for neurospicy kids. They need clear, succinct explanations in plain language. Euphemisms or vague answers only add confusion. If they ask, "What happens to a dead body?" Then give them the facts, no dancing around the subject. (Obviously keep it age appropriate though!!) At the same time, I make sure to explain context—like how some questions might not be appropriate to ask a grieving person at that moment. It’s about balancing honesty with empathy and helping them understand social cues as well. Tackling tricky subjects head-on helps build trust and gives them a solid foundation for processing the world around them.

  • So, this morning started in a rather unexpected way. At 5:45am, I got up for a quick wee and bumped into a bleary-eyed young man in boxers heading back to the spare room. He was very polite, smiled, and said 'Hi,' and I was just relieved I'd thought to put on a big floppy T-shirt! By the time I got up properly at half 7, our house looked like a scene from a Netflix comedy—bodies strewn about everywhere, all groaning with 'headaches' and claiming they were starving. Now, I know for some, this would be the makings of a nightmare morning, but honestly, it just makes me smile. I absolutely love that our house is always full of people. I love that Lou feels she can always let friends stay over, no matter what. After whipping up a mountain of bacon butties and playing taxi to a bunch of teenagers around the county, the house finally quietened down as Lou crawled back into bed. That’s when I had a moment to sit and think about how some of my friends would have reacted to the same situation. I definitely have friends who would’ve hated my start to the day. They’d have been stressed to the max, but each of them has their own wonderful strengths. One of them always offers to collect our kids if they’re stranded somewhere—she doesn’t drink and is a total night owl. Another has a beautiful orchard behind her house where the kids have always been welcome to camp. And one of them is a brilliant seamstress who’s made and fixed so many outfits over the years. So, my message for today is to play to your strengths. We’re always encouraging our neurospicy kids to focus on their strengths, yet we often only see our own challenges. It’s so important to model the behaviour we want to encourage in our children. Embrace your strengths, and show them how it’s done! #thebusinessofstories

I know this seems to go against everything we want to do as parents BUT Your child will fail at things in their life and if we don't equip them for that, then we are not doing our job. Let them fail while you are still around to help solve things and pick up the pieces. To talk about why something failed and what the could do in that situation in the future. The alternative is to send them out into the world and let them fail at things all on their own, without support and without any experience of how to cope. The terminology of 'passing' and 'failing' suddenly becomes much closer to home at this time of year. If you have children who are facing up to the exam season, then now is the time to give them the best support you can. My Exam Game-plan week is aimed at parents of neurospicy tweens and teens who need a strategy that suits their familiy, their kids and their situation. Revision is not a 'one size fits all' kinda challenge! From Year 6 SATs, all the way through to A Levels and beyond, our kids are expected to cope with exams every year. If you would like to help build a strategy for them, check out the link and book here - it's £7 for the week - a no-brainer!! We start on Sunday - I'd love to see you there! https://lnkd.in/eeut68qc
