The next generation of sensors and imagers enabled by 2D materials digital integration
About us
Next-2Digits is an Horizon Europe funded project, that aims to develop the next generation of sensors and imagers enabled by 2D materials digital integration. With a consortium of 11 partners from 8 different countries, Next-2Digits aims to tackle the challenges associated with Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs), Optoelectronic Integrated Circuits (OEICs) and 2D materials. Next-2Digits benefits from the presence of well-reputed academic, research and industrial teams, whose areas of work span from photonics, material science, application-based integration technologies and validation. The proposed technology to integrate graphene into PICs, being one-step and free of chemical processing, will have significant advantages in terms of cost, material and energy saving, and reduced resulting waste. Next-2Digits envisions to develop the first hybrid Graphene-based photodetectors (PDs) and modulators (MDs). Next-2Digits is involved in the GrapheneEU CSA project, under the Graphene Flagship Initiative.

⏮ What a week! #GrapheneWeek2024 is officially over, and we are very happy to have been part of it. Meeting, in #Prague, with research and industry representatives working in the field of 2D materials has been a pleasure. A big thanks to the Graphene Flagship, who organised the whole event, and the other 11 RIAs/IAs who sponsored the event along with Next-2Digits: 2DNeuralVision, GATEPOST, GRAPHERGIA, Project ARMS, MUNASET, 2D-BioPAD, GIANCE project, 2D-PRINTABLE, 2D ENGINE, 2DSPIN-TECH, SAFARI Project. Also thanks to the three Chairs of the Graphene Week 2024, our coordinator, Prof. Ioanna Zergioti from the National Technical University of Athens, along with Dr. Aristides Bakandritsos from Palacký University in Olomouc and Prof. Zdeněk Sofer from University of Chemistry and Technology in Prague (UCT Prague), for the excellent contribution to the whole conference. 📽 Check out in the comments section the #video summarising the Graphene Week 2024 experience! 💡 Many interesting and valuable parallel sessions and workshops have been made during the week and we can proudly say that Next-2Digits has been involved and contributed to them in several oral and poster presentations: “Graphene integration in 200 mm MEMS production line” presented by Andreas Sandin from Silex Microsystems. “Laser-induced transfer of 2D materials: a digital fabrication method for capacitive devices” presented by Ilias Cheliotis from the National Technical University of Athens. “On the journey from Lab to Fab” presented by Alba Centeno Pérez from Graphenea. “Simulation of a Novel Graphene Photodetector for Enhanced Optoelectronic Applications” poster presented by Francis (Yu) Tian Tian from Ommatidia LIDAR. Several dissemination and informative materials, were also present, showcasing the project's motives, goals, and expected impact. All these are available and downloadable on the Next-2Digits website - www.next-2digits.eu ❗ During this week the whole Next-2Digits consortium had also the chance to meet and discuss further the latest results developed within the first year, where wafer platforms for the graphene transfer processes have been set up and the mask designs and full process flows have been made. The next key steps for the project have been identified to progress towards the project's end goals. 🙏 Next-Digits is very proud of being part of this collaboration and we are looking forward to the next steps for the future of the Graphene Flagship Initiative. The Next-2Digits project will develop three graphene enabled applications: miniaturised light detection and ranging (LiDAR) with an integrated graphene photodetector (PD) for an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV); a PIC greenhouse gas sensor offering multi-sensing capability; and an on-chip polarisation diversity receiver (PDR) with extended bandwidth and high resolution. These innovative applications will contribute to the fields of sustainable and efficient environmental monitoring and medical diagnostics, with the aim to solve application-specific challenges that hamper the wide adoption of graphene and 2D materials (2DM) in optoelectronics and sensors. The main challenge is to ensure the compatibility of the newly introduced 2DM transfer technologies with the SOI platforms and the processes involved in both the fabrication of the waveguides and the integration of the chips, while keeping the 2DM layers intact and defect-free. Building on a decade of success, the Graphene Flagship has now continued its journey under the European Commission's Horizon Europe funding programme and in October split into a fleet of separately funded projects. Bringing together 118 academic and industrial partners in 12 research and innovation projects and one coordination and support project, the Graphene Flagship will continue to advance Europe’s strategic autonomy in technologies that rely on graphene and other 2D materials (2DM) with the common goal to commercialise graphene. The projects work on applications in key areas from composites and energy to biomedical and electronics. Fundamental work on emerging 2DM is also being addressed in our 2DM of tomorrow projects, in addition to research into health and safety, which will continue to be an integral part of the initiative.
