NiSource team members are passionate about supporting their communities through volunteering, and we celebrate those who go above and beyond. We call them our 'Super Volunteers.' Senior Operations Support Specialist Luis Mendoza, based in Indiana, is our latest Super Volunteer. Luis' commitment to giving back extends far beyond his role at NiSource. With his wife, Luis leads the Young Adults Ministry Agape127 in his local community, helping young adults aged 19 to 39 navigate life's challenges and providing a community of support. In addition to his work with Agape127, Luis is an active member of NiSource's Latino employee resource group GOLD (Generating Opportunities for Latinos and Diversity). His drive to serve stems from personal experiences – having witnessed the struggles his peers faced with academic, career and mental health pressures. Luis wanted to make a difference in the lives of others. "I have seen the overwhelming challenges that people both my age and younger deal with daily," Luis said. "I felt compelled to offer support to those feeling isolated or uncertain about their path in life, and volunteering allowed me to channel those concerns into meaningful action." For Luis, the most rewarding aspect of his volunteer work is witnessing the powerful sense of connection it fosters, especially during his community's Thanksgiving dinner, which brings together 500 local people in need to share a meal and celebrate the holiday. "The laughter, smiles and stories shared during that event are heartwarming," he said. "It reminds me of the strength of community and how coming together to lift each other up can be such a blessing. Volunteering at the dinner is an experience I look forward to every year." Luis shared his advice on how others can get involved. "Whether it's volunteering at events like a community Thanksgiving dinner for those less fortunate, leveraging your skills or simply joining a local group, there are so many ways to make an impact," Luis said. "Volunteering isn't just about giving; it's about growing and connecting with others." Thank you for your commitment and dedication to helping your local community, Luis.
