  • So important to remember the history of the profession and the legacy of the first Black CPA 👨🏾💼

    John W. Cromwell, Jr. CPA (September 2, 1883 - December 16, 1971) in 1921 became the first African American to earn the designation of CPA. His father, John Wesley Cromwell Sr., was born enslaved in 1846 in Portsmouth, Virginia. In 1851, their father purchased freedom for his family, and they moved to Philadelphia in the free state of Pennsylvania. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Dartmouth in 1906. After completing his MA, he returned home to DC and became a math teacher at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School. In 1921, New Hampshire passed legislation enabling CPA candidates to earn their certificate without an experience requirement – a factor that limited opportunity for those without existing connections to the profession. He traveled to New Hampshire for the exam and became a CPA. He continued to teach high school while practicing accountancy in DC. According to the National Association of Black Accountants, He worked almost exclusively within the African American community, serving lawyers, churches, restaurants, and funeral homes. In 1930, he became comptroller of Howard University. When he retired in 1956, he was still the only African American CPA in DC. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence #phibetakappa #omegapsiphi

    Accelerated/Accounting Career Awareness Program (ACAP) at Howard University School of Business The George S. Willie ACAP at Howard University just wrapped with approximately 60 outstanding students participating from across the country. The students were treated to an introduction to the accounting and finance profession through a series of engaging workshops and a group case competition on the premier HBCU campus of Howard University. Some of the presentations and events included: - Forensic Accounting with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Internal Revenue Service - Careers in Internal Audit with the The Institute of Internal Auditors Inc. - Resume Building and Personal Branding with GRF CPAs & Advisors - Tax with CohnReznick LLP - Mental Health with Crowe - Navigating College & Life as a Student Athlete with Withum - Meet and Greet with Guylaine Saint Juste, NABA INC. CEO - A visit to the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture - Deloitte Office Visit - A Conversation with (The Man), Sir. George S. Willie, Managing Partner, Bert Smith & Co. And I had the honor of serving as the Keynote Speaker to close the program as Immediate Past Chairman of the AICPA and Association of International Certified Professional Accountants This was an amazing week under the leadership of Jean T. Wells, Esq., CPA. I congratulate these amazing students on investing in themselves and their futures over the summer as well as their parents. I thank the outstanding organizations and firms for the investment of time, talent and treasure to support and grow the pipeline of our profession. I thank the administration, faculty, staff and students at Howard University for showcasing college life the HBCU way and creating an amazing experience for the students that I am sure will be life changing. Lastly, but definitely not least, thank you to Aaron Slaughter, CPA, Monica B. and Daniel T. Watford for serving as the case competition judges. Well done.

  • Is there anything more debated than the 150 hour rule when you get CPAs together?

    In his farewell tour, outgoing AICPA CEO Barry Melancon is defending the 150-hour rule. He claims the extra year of schooling has "elevated" the profession, creating smarter, savvier CPAs. But has it really? MIT Sloan researchers found no measurable difference in CPA quality due to the fifth year. Zero. Zilch. Nada. Instead, the only impact has been a nosedive in the number of CPAs. Non-minority CPAs decreased by 14%, while some minority groups plummeted by a staggering 26%. Here's the truth: Melancon's accomplishment was to grow the AICPA, not the profession. And boy, did he succeed. Under his watch, the AICPA has become a cash cow. But at what cost? CPA salaries have stagnated, while the AICPA actively works to keep those salaries low by promoting offshoring and automation. While big firms have become more profitable than ever, Individual CPAs are worse off than they were in 1980 when you adjust what they get paid for inflation. Melancon dismisses the CPA decline as a COVID blip, but this trend has been brewing for over a decade. His legacy? The 300,000 people who jumped ship during his tenure. Sure, he grew the AICPA. But it's been at the expense of the average accountant, making it harder than ever to attract fresh talent. It's time for the AICPA to start prioritizing its members over its own growth. The 150-hour rule may have had its day, but that day has passed. We need bold leaders willing to make tough changes to secure a thriving future for CPAs. But hey, that's just my two cents.     This one is special..... Earlier this year, I reached out to a few good friends in the profession for a discussion on equity, inclusion and belonging specifically on growing the pool of African American/Black students and college graduates entering the accounting and finance profession. All of them answered the call. Many of us within the profession are working to grow the pipeline broadly. During this series, I wanted to spend focused time on the challenge specific to African American/Black students and professionals, because the numbers are dramatically unrepresented within the profession. During the first four modules, I am joined by Herschel Frierson, Steven Harris, Kimberly N. Ellison-Taylor and Crystal Cooke for introductions, our stories, key takeaways for the series and pipeline solutions. Upon watching the first four of the series, you will find something for everyone.
