  • 💧OHM's Christine V. Spitzley, AICP recently moderated a Source Water Protection webinar with the American Water Works Association (AWWA), which took a deep dive into the crucial role of protecting our most precious resource. Highlighting the ascent of source water protection (SWP) to the top concern in the 2024 State of the Water Industry report, this discussion emphasized the importance of collaboration across communities for effective protection strategies. 🤝 As Christine noted, "Successful SWP programs require all community members to participate — municipalities and water departments cannot do it alone. It takes businesses, citizens, fire, planning and health departments, adjacent communities, educators and more to create a comprehensive approach to protection." This collective effort is vital in addressing the diverse challenges of maintaining clean, safe water for all, and the speakers on the webinar panel – representing the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Freshwater, Michigan State University Extension and OHM Advisors – perfectly illustrated a sample of the various entities needed to be committed to SWP. What are some practical steps to integrate best practices into water protection initiatives? 🔷 Network with other SWP communities to glean the best of the best ideas. 🔷 Whenever possible, look for opportunities to protect water resources by integrating best management practices into existing efforts, such as site plan reviews, or by creating a local environmental permits checklist. 🔷 Take advantage of resources from the AWWA, such as their SWP Justification Toolkit, SWP Performance Metrics Tool, and the ANSI/AWWA G300 SWP Standard and Operational Guide. We’re committed to continuing the conversation and ensuring a sustainable water future for generations to come! #SourceWaterProtection #AWWA #AWWAwebinars #SustainableFuture

  • As OHM Advisors marks another year of community-focused advancements, we’re proud to integrate wastewater surveillance into our toolkit for public health. Our expert and manager for the firm's Environmental Planning & Restoration work, Valerie Novaes PE, explains: 🔬 Wastewater surveillance involves collecting samples from sewer systems to monitor pathogens. This powerful approach enables rapid pandemic preparedness, allowing us to track new pathogens more effectively. 📊 During COVID-19, this method was critical in providing data that shaped responses to coronavirus and other diseases like RSV. Val’s work with the Oakland County Health Department has built a robust model for future surveillance that will help safeguard communities. Wastewater surveillance is more than a tool—it’s a breakthrough in public health, offering data to anticipate and prevent outbreaks. 💡 Interested in learning more about our Water expertise? • OHM Advisors is honored to receive an ACEC Tennessee Award for our work on the Giles County Courthouse Facilities Condition Assessment! 🏛🏆 The historic Giles County Courthouse, one of Tennessee’s most picturesque buildings, was showing signs of decline. Without existing floorplans and with hard-to-access areas, our team utilized advanced tools like laser scanning, 360-degree photography, and drone technology to create an accurate visual dataset, informing design solutions and preserving this landmark. This project highlights our commitment to advancing communities by leveraging cutting-edge technologies to preserve and enhance a landmark space that will benefit the county for years to come. Special thanks to our project partners EMC Structural Engineers, P.C. and Henderson Engineers for their collaboration! 💧 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹-𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 💧 We’re proud to partner with the Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA) to push the boundaries of water quality monitoring in the complex waters of the Lower Rouge River. Our dedicated team, led by Karlin Danielsen as lead scientist and Kayla McRobb as the field technician for sensor deployment, is on the cutting edge of testing submersible sondes to measure key water quality indicators like E. coli in real-time. This groundbreaking project evaluated the ability of the parameter Tryptophan-like fluorescence to match traditional grab sample results. The data from this project quantified the extent of wet weather impairments and captured the storm- and season-specific nature of E. coli loading to the Rouge River.
