💧 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹-𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 💧 We’re proud to partner with the Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA) to push the boundaries of water quality monitoring in the complex waters of the Lower Rouge River. Our dedicated team, led by Karlin Danielsen as lead scientist and Kayla McRobb as the field technician for sensor deployment, is on the cutting edge of testing submersible sondes to measure key water quality indicators like E. coli in real-time. This groundbreaking project evaluated the ability of the parameter Tryptophan-like fluorescence to match traditional grab sample results. The data from this project quantified the extent of wet weather impairments and captured the storm- and season-specific nature of E. coli loading to the Rouge River. 🌱 **Innovative Groundwater Treatment with Constructed Wetlands** 🌱 We're excited to share the launch of our **constructed wetland pilot project** at the Griftpark groundwater treatment facility! This pioneering project explores the potential of constructed wetlands to treat groundwater contaminated with high concentrations of BTEX, PAH, and mineral oils. Our pilot tests three different types of wetlands with varying soil compositions and oxygenation levels to assess their efficiency. Early results show promising reductions in contamination levels by up to 90%, particularly in PAH and mineral oils. What's even more exciting is the integration of advanced sensors, which allow us to monitor key variables such as redox potential, pH, and temperature in real time—providing valuable insights into the wetlands' performance. 🌍 With this pilot, we are taking a step forward in sustainable, innovative solutions for groundwater treatment. Stay tuned for more updates! #Sustainability #GroundwaterTreatment #ConstructedWetlands #Innovation #EnvironmentalEngineering #SustainableSolutions #HMVT #CleanWater https://lnkd.in/ecmrUP_S (Joshua Both Paul Verhaagen Johan Van Leeuwen PhD Peter Rood)

Excited to announce the publication of our latest paper: "Towards a Modelling Framework for Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) in Wastewater Treatment" In this study, we proposed a comprehensive modelling framework, initially derived from case studies involving an #aerated_lagoon, a #biofilm_enhanced_aerated_lagoon, a #stormwater_basin, and a #constructed_wetland. We then expanded this framework to include eight additional #NBS categories, resulting in a total of 10 sub-models. Finally, we refined the framework to focus on 13 primary use cases of NBS, identifying the sub-models required for these specific applications. This work is a significant step forward in identifying and #modelling the essential sub-models for various NBS systems and use cases in #wastewater treatment. A special thanks to Peter Vanrolleghem #modelEAU, Yves Comeau #Polytechnique_Montreal , Dwight Houweling #Dynamita, Jean-Michel Perron #modelEAU, Daniel Bencsik #Dynamita, and Tom Johnson, PE, BCEE #Jacobs for their invaluable cooperation as co-authors. https://lnkd.in/eXC_7RQx

Join us for our next GeoPro Talk on Wednesday October 23rd at 10am PT for Latest Update: World’s First Injected In-Situ Treatment Barrier for a PFAS Groundwater Plume Using Specifically Engineered PFAS Sorption Media While industry waits for cost-effective complete destruction technologies for soil and groundwater contamination by PFAS compounds (the “forever chemicals” that have become one of the critical emerging environmental contaminant issues of recent times), site owners are driven to risk management approaches, preventing the further migration of existing impacts. In October of 2023, in Northern Alberta, a world-first injection of a specifically-engineered PFAS sorption media based on modified clay was successfully carried out to block migration of relatively high concentrations of PFAS compounds in groundwater along a preferential pathway with major access/infrastructure issues. This talk explains the technique, details the lessons learned – and as a special bonus for GeoEnviroPro – presents the latest available data on long-term performance. Please read our recent editorial on a topic that is very important to me, assimilative capacity. Historically used for discharges of wastes/chemicals to surface waters and the atmosphere, assimilative capacity is an under-utilized concept for regulating subsurface contamination. Note that assimilative capacity is not to be confused with natural attenuation. https://lnkd.in/giEn57aN
