WHY STRATEGIC PLANS FAIL (AND GOAL SETTING TOO): Read these 5 strategy design pitfalls (and how to avoid them) to ensure your strategic plan doesn't fall short in 2025. Design flaws: #1: Too many goals: When leaders fail to prioritize a few goals, teams lack focus. Effort is spread too thin and little progress gets made on any goals. #2: Goals lack specificity: Goals do not clarify the finish line or how to get there. #3: Goals created in isolation: Leaders set goals without engaging others. The resulting plan lacks relevance and buy-in. #4: Goals lack ownership: When goal ownership is unclear, a lack of accountability flows. #5: Lack of clarity on the current situation: Strategy focuses on desired outcomes or future state without understanding the current state.
