Even in challenging times, environmental multilateralism works.   This week in Rome at the #COP16Resumed session, countries have come together and finished the work that began in Cali last year – work that puts us on a path to truly make #PeaceWithNature.   Thanks to the hard work of #COP16Colombia President Susana Muhamad, UN Biodiversity and Executive Secretary Astrid Schomaker, the world has agreed key commitments to support the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework #KMGBF:   • A resource mobilization strategy to close the biodiversity finance gap and mobilize funds from all sources • Indicators to measure global and national progress towards implementing the Global Biodiversity Framework • The launch of the Cali Fund to ensure the equitable sharing of benefits from the commercial use of genetic information sequenced from nature   This is important progress but as always, commitments are only as good as the action that backs them. Nature remains in serious decline. We need all countries and all stakeholders to deliver their promises in full and as quickly as possible. After all, investments in nature are an investment in our own future.   UN Environment Programme looks forward to supporting countries and partners make the goals agreed this week a reality, #ForPeopleForPlanet.

Japan submitted its new Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) today, putting it on a path to reach net-zero emissions by 2050 and outlining its interim targets: 🎯 60% emissions reduction by 2035  🎯 73% emissions reduction by 2040 Strong climate action – especially from G20 countries such as Japan – and hitting emissions targets is vital to protect every economy and 8 billion people from the worsening climate crisis.   These new national climate plans are also crucial for countries to share in the huge human and economic benefits: stronger growth, more jobs, boosting innovation and competitiveness, more secure and affordable energy. Now more than ever, it is entirely in Japan's interests to take climate action to the next level, and ensure Japan’s people and businesses share fully in the 2 trillion-dollar clean energy global boom.  #ParisAgreement #ClimateAction #NDC #Japan

The United Nations has postponed TODAYS (10th Feb) deadline for countries to submit their 'Nationally Determined Contributions' (#NDCs) to September... This is because a pitifully low 10 / 197 countries (covering 16% of global emissions) had submitted updates to their national net zero targets by the deadline. Bravo to those who successfully hit the deadline... Andorra Brazil Ecuador New Zealand Saint Lucia Switzerland United Arab Emirates United Kingdom United States (till Trump screwed it up) Uruguay And a particularly scathing 🤨 to hosts of COP29 Azerbaijan who have STILL failed to submit an NDC, despite committing to do so last summer. They may go down in history as the least credible COP hosts ever given this plus the scandals around using the summit to sell their own #fossilfuels... Countries need to step up and create vastly more momentum in the build up to #COP30 in Brazil this November. Durante la COP29, nella giornata dedicata alla Pace, l’Italia, in cooperazione con la presidenza azerbaijana, la Gran Bretagna, la Germania, l’Egitto e gli Emirati Arabi Uniti, ha lanciato l’iniziativa “Climate & Peace, Baku hub”. Lo scopo è quello di attenzionare il crescente numero dei conflitti nel mondo dovuto alle coseguenze del cambiamento climatico: scarsità d’acqua e di cibo, desertificazione e flussi migratori. Il Piano Mattei viene inserito nell’iniziativa come strumento di pace.

🧭 Competitiveness Compass: la presidente della Commissione Europea ha presentato la #Bussola per la competitività, che trasforma le raccomandazioni del rapporto Draghi in una tabella di marcia per l’UE. Von der Leyen ha detto che il 🟢 Green Deal resta una priorità, che la #decarbonizzazione prosegue, e addirittura (questa è stata una sorpresa davvero inattesa) resta l’obiettivo al 2040 di una riduzione delle emissioni del 90%, cosa che non piace né ai conservatori né ai popolari. Naturalmente però la “bussola” annuncia una maggiore gradualità e un aggiustamento delle norme nel senso della semplificazione e velocizzazione delle procedure. Si capisce che ci sarà flessibilità anche su alcuni punti, come le multe alle industrie dell’automotive, ma non solo. E soprattutto, si capisce che sulle misure del #GreenDeal von der Leyen navigherà a vista.
