The OOC has served as a vital platform for the global ocean community to recognise the importance of a sustainable ocean

About us

The Our Ocean Conference(OOC), first held in the United States in 2014, has served as a vital platform for the global ocean community- including governments, international organizations, global corporations, NGOs, and academia-to recognize the importance of the ocean to all humanity and to foster international cooperation for a sustainable ocean. Through the OOC, with more than 2,600 commitments valued at approximately $140 billion, participants around the world have significantly and concretely contributed to the conservation and sustainable use of our ocean. The 10th Our Ocean Conference will take place in Busan, Republic of Korea, from 28th to 30th April 2025 under the theme 'Our Ocean, Our Action'. Marking its 10th anniversary, the 10th OOC will showcase the achievements, exemplary commitments, and their progress updates from the global ocean community over the past decade, providing new inspiration and momentum for our collective action.

  • Special Event for the 10th Our Ocean Conference at the Greek Pavilion, COP29. On Day 3, Greece, host of the 9th Our Ocean Conference, brought together leaders at the Greek Pavilion to showcase the Our Ocean Conference’s unique, action-driven approach. With the 10th Our Ocean Conference approaching, discussions highlighted what makes the conference impactful and how each host country contributes its unique perspective to tackling global ocean challenges. As #OurOceanKorea in April 2025 draws nearer, Korea introduced “Digital Oceans” as a new focal area, leveraging technology and AI to address issues like autonomous navigation, marine exploration, and fisheries management. This innovative focus builds on OOC’s tradition of inspiring meaningful commitments and accountability. Greece also reflected on the successes of OOC9, from expanded marine protections to advancements in green shipping. The event reinforced the importance of cross-border collaboration and underscored the OOC’s mission to drive real progress for ocean conservation. 🙏🌊 A heartfelt thank you to Greece from Korea for hosting this event and for their ongoing support and commitment. COP29 Ocean Pavilion "Mobilizing Ocean Action: the 10th Our Ocean Conference" It was a great honor to address the Ocean Pavilion and convey the messages that the 9th Our Ocean Conference Our Ocean Conference brought to COP29 Azerbaijan. In April 2024, Greece, a maritime nation and leader in global shipping, organized the 9th Our Ocean Conference and the Youth Leadership Summit, in close cooperation with the US Department of State and the participation of 130 countries, (11 Heads of State/Government and 60 Ministers), 20 International Organizations, and more than 3000 high level delegates from the epistemic and civil society community, local authorities and the private sector. New commitments for the oceans amounted to 471 amounting to some $11.35 billion in the following Action Areas: 1. Climate Change and the ocean nexus; 2. Sustainable Fisheries, 3. Sustainable Blue Economy, 4. Marine Protected Areas, 5. Maritime Safety, 6. Marine pollution Greece, for its part, announced twenty-one (21) specific commitments, totaling EUR 780 million, mainly in the areas of marine protected areas, marine pollution response, sustainable fisheries, and the blue economy. The most important of the national commitments are the creation of two new marine parks, in the Ionian and Aegean Sea, which will cover approximately 32% of national waters and the monitoring and surveillance system of marine protected areas using new technologies, the ban - by 2030 - of certain fishing practices (such as bottom  trawling). The Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis himself announced the launch of a new Decarbonization Fund for the Greek islands, with resources of around €2 billion.  Further, 12 harbors in Greece will be equipped with cold ironing, while Greece will support low-emission ships. In addition, our country announced that it will ratify the BBNJ Agreement. In Greece the global community was reminded once again that the Ocean is our ally in combating climate change. Let’s always remember that we own to the Ocean every second breath we take. If we treat the nexus of ocean-climate effectively then we will own to the ocean the survival of humanity and the ecosystems. There is no green without blue. #ourocean #ouroceangreece #ourocean9 #greece #ocean #Cop29 #cop29baku #Avgerinopoulou
