🌊 Today, June 8, is World Ocean Day! 🌊 The ocean covers over 70% of Earth’s surface, produces half our planet’s oxygen, and absorbs 30% of human-made CO2. It supports 3 billion people's livelihoods and employs around 200 million in ocean-related industries. However, human activities are causing significant harm: 🫧 Carbon emissions are leading to ocean warming, acidification, and oxygen loss. ⋆。˚ Coastal waters are deteriorating due to pollution and eutrophication. 🪸 90% of big fish populations are depleted, and half of all coral reefs are destroyed. The World Economic Forum brings together the Friends of Ocean Action, a coalition of global leaders working to protect the seas. Their initiatives include: ༄ Scaling blue carbon benefits through coordinated action with governments ༄ Strengthening and empowering local communities ༄ A global partnership for sustainable blue food value chains ༄ Supporting 1000 transformative Ocean Startups by 2030 👉 https://lnkd.in/e2ueDxSB The last 2 years have seen historic agreements: 𓇼 to commit to protect and restore 30% of the ocean and coastal areas by 2030 𓇼 to manage and protect Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) also widely known as the High Seas Treaty 𓇼 to end harmful fisheries subsidies 𓇼 to develop a Global Plastics Treaty 𓇼 to place the ocean in the main domain of UN Climate Conferences and as a priority of the G20 agenda through the Oceans 20 The Third UN Ocean Conference will open in one year from now in Nice. It is crucial to accelerate these efforts and attain the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal for the Ocean (SDG14). To achieve that unity of purpose, Friends of Ocean Action, co-chaired by the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Ocean, identified a set of key asks in the “Bring it All Together” challenge 👉 https://lnkd.in/exkgVge7

🌊 Beyond Norwegian Waters: Addressing the Silent Decline of the Caspian Environment 🌍 Our commitment at Akvaplan-niva extends far beyond Norwegian waters. We are deeply concerned with the environmental health of international bodies like the Caspian Sea, which faces critical challenges. In our latest collaboration with scientists from the Caspian Sea region, "A Note on the Silent Decline of the Caspian Environment," we delve into the pressing issues impacting this unique ecosystem—from bio-physical changes and pollution to climate shifts and declining bioresources. With COP24 in Baku on the horizon, it's crucial to bring global attention to these silent crises and work together to protect our shared waters. https://lnkd.in/dh_tPgNp Akvaplan-niva

Today we're celebrating #WorldOceansDay, which happens every year on June 8. Did you know that only 10% of the oceans have been explored? #AwakenNewDepths “There is so much still to learn about oceans – and, importantly, to reverse the damage being caused to our precious lifeline resource.” —Dennis Francis, President of the UN General Assembly The State of the Ocean report warned that the rate of ocean warming has doubled in 20 years and that coastal species are suffocating due to decreased oxygen levels in the ocean, among other things. While these truths are heart wrenching, we must take them as critical calls to action in our daily lives. One of its conclusions is that “ocean literacy practice and research is a strategic ally to optimize resources, accelerate behavioral change and improve the implementation of ocean conservation programs and sustainability practices.” We can make a difference together, primarily by learning and making sustainable purchases. #LovetheEarth #WeLovetheEarth

Excited to share insights from the #EuropeanOceanDays event held in #Brussels, March 2024! It was an enriching experience being part of the 2nd Annual Mission Ocean Restore our Ocean and Waters Forum, where diverse stakeholders converged to deliberate on central advancements in #oceanrestoration over the past year. The forum served as a platform for combining stocktaking with actionable steps toward implementation, aiming to upscale efforts and catalyze the restoration of our waters. Highlighting SUBMARINER's impactful contributions, our CEO Schultz-Zehden Angela took the stage to discuss the innovative AlgaeProBANOS project. Speaking on a panel dedicated to climate neutrality and circularity in the blue economy, Angela emphasized the transformative #potential of #algaecultivation in Europe, underlining its significance in fostering a circular blue economy. Moreover, Alberto Terenzi represented us on the “Mission Ocean and Waters in action” panel, shedding light on Blue Mission Banos Project #bluemissionbanos. His talk underscored its crucial role in mobilizing regional stakeholders, and facilitating a collaborative environment to address the pressing marine issues in the #Baltic and #NorthSea regions. The biannual #MissionArena events by Blue Mission Banos Project #bluemissionbanos stand out as key moments where stakeholders collectively draft a region-specific roadmap, charting out steps to achieve the objectives of Mission Ocean & Waters. 👉🏻Read more here: https://lnkd.in/dcNg9k9Z #EuropeanOceanDays #OceanRestoration #SUBMARINER #BlueEconomy #Sustainability #MissionOceanWaters
