DEP reviews more than 45,000 permit applications every year. These include permits for land clearing activities for construction projects, air quality permits for factories and power plants, permits to upgrade drinking waters systems to remove chemicals like PFAS, and permits for oil and gas wells.
Big news for Pennsylvania’s businesses and communities! Governor Josh Shapiro has signed an Executive Order to launch the PA Permit Fast Track Program—the nation’s first project-based permitting fast track program for major economic development and infrastructure projects. This initiative builds on the Shapiro Administration’s work to reduce red tape, increase transparency, and make government work more efficiently and effectively. ⏩
The Pennsylvania DEP has already reduced its permit backlog by 75% since November 2023, eliminating the backlog for oil and gas permits while speeding up reviews for other critical projects. With the PA Permit Fast Track Program and other innovations like the SPEED program and the PAyback guarantee, DEP is helping businesses get the permits they need faster while protecting our environment. Governor Shapiro is committed to making Pennsylvania a place where government moves at the speed of business to drive economic growth, create jobs, and build a stronger future for all.
