AI isn't just the future of healthcare. It's the present—and it's shaping how people access care and information. Last week, Population Services International and the Bay Area Global Health Alliance convened thought leaders at the Microsoft Africa Development Centre in Nairobi during Global Digital Health Forum #GDHF2024 week. The discussion focused on how AI can transform consumer health behaviors and strengthen health systems across Africa. Here are the lessons we’re taking forward: 🔹 Government readiness is growing, but capacity must keep up. African governments are eager to integrate AI into health systems, but sustainable growth depends on strengthening digital capacity to meet demand. 🔹 AI is boosting access and driving engagement. Early evidence shows AI is increasing consumers' intent to seek healthcare information and services. 🔹 Context is key, and AI solutions must be locally relevant. By using localized data and addressing Africa-specific needs, AI can deliver more personalized, impactful results. 🔹 Bias must be addressed. Tackling algorithmic, data, cultural, and contextual biases is essential to ensure AI-driven healthcare is accurate, relatable, and trustworthy for African communities. Special thanks to Pfizer for sponsoring this global convening and to the incredible guest speakers who shared their insights on this critical topic. #AIForHealth #DigitalHealth #GlobalHealth #AI #SocialChange #Healthcare #Innovation #Africa

Squeezing in one last milestone before 2025! This year, the Population Services International-led and Unitaid-funded Plus Project supported the delivery of over 1️⃣ MILLION doses of SP through Perennial Malaria Chemoprevention (#PMC) — protecting young children from #malaria in areas where transmission is year-round. This achievement is a reminder of the progress we can achieve through collaboration with governments, health workers, and local partners. Explore how this work is closing gaps in #malariaprevention ⬇️ ⬇️
As we close out the year, we celebrate a project milestone: supporting the administration of more than 1️⃣ MILLION doses of SP through PMC to protect young children from malaria! This milestone achievement is the result of collaboration and commitment between government leaders, health workers, local organizations, and project teams. Read our latest newsletter about this impact: 📰https://lnkd.in/gekT-U5X 35 million children under the age of 2 live in areas where malaria transmission is perennial or year-round, thus they are not eligible for seasonal chemoprevention. And only 4 million of them received the WHO-recommended PMC - more than 1 million doses of which were administered with support by the Unitaid Plus Project. We continue to advocate for the expansion of PMC where appropriate, and call attention to the inequity in where and how interventions are currently targeted.

There are many reasons why AI is the biggest buzzword across industries. One big factor: Data. AI-powered technologies are transforming how we access and use data — and in global health, that means driving greater uptake of essential services. At this month's Global Digital Health Forum #GDHF2024, Karina Rios Michel of Girl Effect shared powerful insights on how AI tools like chatbots are increasing knowledge about contraceptives — and how that knowledge is leading to more people accessing health services. Ending #opendefecation and achieving universal #sanitation isn’t just about building toilets — it’s about creating a system that lasts. Through the USAID-funded Countywide Sanitation Activity (CWSA), Population Services International, Athena Infonomics, Concern Worldwide, Gusceman Inc., are working to transform sanitation governance, strengthen markets, and mobilize financing across five counties in #Liberia. 📌 Learn how this project is fostering systemic change: https://lnkd.in/gmsJg4_N #CWSAinLiberia #WaSH #WASHLiberia #SanitationforAll #WaterforAll #SDG6 #ToiletsforAll #SafeToilets #InnovationForGood #DataForGood #DataForDevelopment #SocialImpact #LookingBackAt2024 #CountdownTo2025

The Falana Small-scale Irrigation (SSI) project, implemented under USAID Transform WASH, has brought new life to local farming 🌽 communities in South Wello Zone, Kalu Woreda. Before the upgrade, limited water access confined farmers to a single harvest each year. Today, with reliable irrigation, farmers like Andwalem are harvesting multiple times annually. This shift has led to increased yields, better incomes, and improved food security. Beyond enhancing agricultural productivity, the project champions sustainable farming practices, paving the way for a greener and more resilient future for generations to come. #SustainableGrowth #USAIDTransformWASH #PSIEthiopia Population Services International

Integrated, differentiated, person-centered self-care approaches are paving the way for stronger health systems and a more equitable HIV response. Self-care tools—like self-testing and digital and community-based solutions—transform systems by reducing reliance on overburdened facilities, addressing barriers like stigma and cost, and creating more inclusive, efficient pathways to care. By embracing these approaches, we can increase choice and access, address diverse individual needs, and build health systems that are more inclusive, effective, and resilient. As Population Services International's Senior VP and Chief Delivery Officer Michael Holscher shares, prioritizing self-care isn’t just a strategy, it’s a pathway to stronger, more equitable health systems for all. The PSI Pakistan team recently engaged in an insightful session with Alison Malmqvist, PSI’s Global Director of SRHR and Vice President for Fundraising and Communications. Drawing from her recent experience at #COP29, Alison emphasized the urgent need to integrate family planning (FP) and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) into climate change strategies. She highlighted the crucial interplay between population dynamics and climate change, stressing that addressing both issues simultaneously is essential for effective solutions. From aligning with Pakistan’s National Disaster Adaptation Plan to using the WHO’s framework for climate-sensitive health systems, she shared powerful insights on tackling climate change through a holistic, people-centered approach. The session left us inspired to innovate, reinforcing the critical need for resilient communities and equitable access to SRHR services in the face of global challenges! #PSIPakistan #ClimateAction #SRHR #FamilyPlanning #ClimateChange #ResilientCommunities #SustainableDevelopment

Investing in women’s health isn’t just the right thing to do — it’s smart business. From maternal health to access to reproductive care, investing in women’s health drives economic returns, boosts productivity, and strengthens entire communities. But closing the gap requires more than funding — it demands a systems approach and partnerships across markets. Population Services International's VP of Social Business Marcie Cook joins the System Catalysts podcast to chat about the role of social businesses to make health systems work better for women everywhere. 🎧 Give it a listen: https://lnkd.in/eDYaqX4v #WomensHealth #InvestInEquity #HealthSystems #SocialImpact #Partnerships Viya Health
