FY 2024 agency financial reports were published today! And what better way to spend the entire day than reading a bunch of them? I managed to read about 8 and skim through a few others. Next week I hope to read about 30 more. Along with the reading, it was a day of reflection and pride. I know how much work folks put in to implementing the new leases standard and auditing it. The quality of the reporting I have read has been impressive. Congratulations to everyone for reaching this milestone. A special shout-out to the GSA OCFO team for successfully implementing the new standard and bringing over $26B in right-to-use lease assets onto their balance sheet. There are many other great examples as well, including U.S. Department of State, Presidio Trust, and many others. The public servants behind this reporting set a great example for the public sector segment of the profession in how to demonstrate accountability, serve the public interest, and honor the public trust. I will be analyzing and documenting the details of what I’m seeing in these AFRs, so I’ll have more to share at some point. Stay tuned.

No visit to the Presidio is complete without a short walk or drive beyond Presidio Tunnel Tops and Crissy Field to Fort Point. From the moment you walk through the fort’s beautifully arched casemates into its storied parade ground, you are surrounded by over 170 years of American, California, and San Francisco history. In 1933, Fort Point was almost torn down to make way for the Golden Gate Bridge, but chief engineer Joseph Strauss redesigned the bridge to save the fort. “While the old fort has no military value now," Strauss said, "it remains nevertheless a fine example of the mason's art.... It should be preserved and restored as a national monument." Thirty-seven years later on October 16, 1970, President Richard Nixon signed a bill making Fort Point a National Historic Site, protecting it for generations of visitors to experience this historic and architectural treasure. Today, visitors of all-ages are invited to discover the fort’s legacy through new exhibits, daily talks with park rangers, and the extremely popular Candlelight Tour offered November through February. The historic "CRISSY FIELD" lettering has officially returned to the rooftop of Building 643 on Mason Street! Originally added in 1925 when the hangar supported the 316th Observation Squadron, the 18-foot letters were used for aerial recognition during Crissy Field’s early days as a military airfield. After a thorough rehabilitation, the iconic signage has been restored, reconnecting the building to its aviation roots and preserving this important piece of Presidio history. Today, the building supports National Park Service operations, but its past as a vital part of U.S. military aviation lives on. Be sure to check it out next time you visit the Presidio! https://bit.ly/4gRfzWy
