Is your packaging ready for upcoming regulatory deadlines? It is now more important than ever to ensure your packaging is aligned with sustainability goals — and compliant with new regulations. Here’s what you need to know: — Oregon’s reporting deadline is March 31, 2025 and several other states like California and Colorado are following suit. — Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) programs are rolling out, which means new fees and compliance obligations. Make sure these costs are included in your budget. — Preparing for these reporting requirements can take months. Now is the time to start organizing your data to ensure you meet the deadlines. We can help you navigate the reporting and disclosure requirements of the new EPR laws and get the most value to your business while driving to more sustainable packaging. Our team at Pure Strategies wrote the following packaging guides: — The Walmart Recycling Playbook: (https://lnkd.in/ekUiTG8G) — The FMI- The Food Industry Association Sustainable Packaging Playbook: (https://lnkd.in/dW_fekDe) — And the FMI Sustainable Packaging Assessment Guide: (https://lnkd.in/eVg8fK5x) And, head to our website to see additional case studies on our work for clients including Perrigo Company plc and MilliporeSigma. Don't wait until the last minute — start preparing today. Let us guide you through the complexities of packaging sustainability to ensure you’re ahead of the curve. Our baseline assessment helps you understand where your company stands and what changes are necessary. We also provide reporting support to assist in gathering and reporting the data required for compliance with regulatory requirements. Additionally, our team will collaborate with you to develop a comprehensive sustainable packaging strategy, creating a clear roadmap to reduce waste and transition to more sustainable solutions that align with both regulatory standards and long-term environmental objectives. Last week, Pure Strategies' Co-Founder and Managing Director Tim Greiner joined the 19th Annual BizNGO meeting in Boston, hosted by Clean Production Action. Tim moderated a conversation with Roberto Bertin (Walmart), Angela Pinilla, PhD (Clean Production Action), and Marcia Frieze (Case Medical, Inc.) exploring examples of corporate leadership in chemical footprinting, lessons learned from the 7th Chemical Footprint Project (CFP) Survey, and opportunities for integrating and elevating chemical footprinting into scalable initiatives, including the UN Global Framework on Chemicals. Takeaways: — Fantastic presentations were given by Margaret Whittaker, Benjamyn Marks, Melissa Wang, Constantina Bichta, and others on the Global Framework on Chemicals [https://lnkd.in/gnf8mWsG] and how the financial sector is addressing the triple planetary crisis. — During the meeting, the rapid growth of plastics and chemical products and its human, environmental, and social impacts were highlighted, particularly as oil and gas companies shift focus from energy to petrochemical feedstocks. Chemical use is highest in China, with Europe and the U.S. consuming only a fraction of that amount (~1/8). — Stephanie Baima from Ceres, Inc.. also presented on the Nature Action 100 [https://lnkd.in/esjPWvkD], an investor-led initiative aiming to drive corporate action on nature, particularly linking the impacts of chemicals on biodiversity. It’s clear that addressing the intersection of chemicals and biodiversity is essential for long-term sustainability. A heartfelt tribute was paid to Mark S. Rossi as he retires as Executive Director of the Clean Production Action — his leadership in safer chemicals has been invaluable! We’re proud to continue building on the foundation Mark has set, driving forward efforts in safer, more sustainable practices and working alongside industry leaders to create a healthier future for all. #Sustainability #ChemicalFootprint #SaferChemicals

The recent INC-5 meetings in Busan highlight the complexities of reaching a global plastics treaty. While progress was made, the divide between nations — some pushing for a comprehensive agreement covering the full plastic lifecycle, others focusing on waste management — has left the negotiations at an impasse. Despite these challenges, negotiators have agreed to keep working from the latest draft, which means the conversation isn’t over yet. The urgency for bold, collaborative action has never been greater, and it’s clear we need more than just political will to solve this crisis. At Pure Strategies, Inc., we remain committed to helping businesses implement solutions. We are a proud to be a member of the Sustainable Packaging Coalition (SPC), Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR), and an Technical Affiliate of the US Plastics Pact, to support broader change including more circular packaging to keep it in the economy and out of the environment. Please reach out to me to discuss how we can support your business! #INC5 #Busan #Plastics #Sustainability

This week, Pure Strategies' Cheryl Baldwin and Natalie Harrah participated in the Innovation Forum Scope 3 event in Arlington, Virginia and Pure Strategies was proud to be an event sponsor. This event took a deep look at supply chain program challenges, the transformational changes that are needed, and opportunities around carbon credits, climate financing, decarbonization and net zero standards. Cheryl spoke alongside Mark Eastham from Ahold Delhaize USA on supplier engagement and empowerment, in a panel moderated by Invariant principal Adam Tarr. Together, they examined practical strategies to strengthen relationships and accelerate sustainability efforts across the supply chain. A common theme that emerged was the importance of sharing clear, valuable information about greenhouse gas reduction initiatives with suppliers, and making the value of their participation clear. This can take place through incentive options, which can further motivate progress and involvement. Reach out to Cheryl to discuss further. #Scope3 #SupplyChain #IFscope3US24

Pure Strategies' Sustainability Advisor Ariella Sela joined the 2024 Sustainable Agriculture Summit in Minneapolis. Speakers across farmers, suppliers, processors, brands, academia, and conservation organizations discussed challenges, successes, and insights to strengthen cross-sector partnerships. Here are some of the key trends and takeaways: — Partnerships & Collaborations: Starbucks is providing direct cost-sharing to dairy farmers through projects including manure digester infrastructure, cover cropping, soil health, tractor electrification, and water conservation, while Nestlé, Ducks Unlimited, Eocene Environmental Group, and Minnesota Pork Producers Association have received a Climate Smart Commodities Grant to implement sustainability practices and validate outcomes in pork production. — Farmer Incentives & Financing: There’s growing momentum for new, collaborative models and incentives to support farm sustainability efforts. For example, Valley Queen Cheese will pay premiums to farmers who reduce their dairy footprint using FarmES. — Data & Tools for Sustainability: Innovative tools including Soil Health Institute’s app and RegenScore are providing farmers with practical solutions to measure and track soil health and regenerative practices, and PepsiCo, McCain Foods, and KDP have published guides to help their suppliers set regen ag targets. — Sustainable Ag Initiatives: Breeding lower-GHG emitting dairy cattle, selecting animals based on methane production, feed intake, milk yield & composition are the focus of the COUNCIL ON DAIRY CATTLE BREEDING, while the Diverse Corn Belt Project is working to accelerate crop diversity across the U.S. landscape. Thanks to Host Partners Field to Market: The Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture and Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy, Convening Partners U.S. Poultry & Egg Association and U.S. Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (USRSB), and other organizations supporting this program who make it possible. #DairySust24 #SustAg2024 #SustainableAgriculture
