Carbon capture and storage (CCS) may sound positive, but really it's a technology that enables Big Oil and Gas to CONTINUE extracting fossil fuels and polluting our environment while pretending to address the climate crisis. The US has committed over $12 BILLION to these failed technologies over the past 40 years, and offered millions worth of tax credits to corporations using carbon capture – even though THEY'RE the ones responsible for the crisis! For years the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) just revised its certification standards – and they’ve adopted their own guidelines for what forest is worth protecting, WITHOUT consultation of conservation NGOs and impacted communities. The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil has historically refused to cut ties with exploitative rainforest destroyers that have been proven to be violating its certification standards. If the RSPO truly wants to right the wrongs created by the #PalmOil industry, it needs to address flaws in its auditing system and adopt explicit requirements for palm oil growers to remedy lands that were taken without communities’ Free, Prior, and Informed Consent. 🚨 NEW REPORT from ShareAction: Banks’ low-ambition and incoherent climate targets are putting the global #NetZero goal at risk. Banks have a huge role to play in averting climate disaster by financing green solutions like wind turbines, solar panels, and energy efficient homes. However, new research from ShareAction has found that the climate targets of Europe’s 20 largest banks are falling short. Banks must finance 10 TIMES the amount of clean energy than fossil fuels by 2030 to ensure a livable future, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). ShareAction’s report reveals that just TWO out of Europe’s 20 largest banks are on track to achieve this. Some of the key findings: ❌ Sustainable finance targets set by banks are not rooted in clear, robust methodology; ❌ Sustainable finance and decarbonisation targets are not sufficiently aligned with one another; ❌ And their decarbonisation targets (targets to reduce the level of emissions created by the activities they fund) are too narrow. ShareAction is writing to the CEOs of each bank included in this report, outlining how they can set better targets that will help them to reach their net zero goal and meet commitments to protect people and the planet. Banks are pouring $77 BILLION into the companies wiping out rainforests. They claim ‘sustainability,’ but the Amazon is burning while they cash in. It’s time to end this hypocrisy and hold them accountable. #ClimateChange #KeepForestsStanding https://yhoo.it/3YtD00X

Beef, #PalmOil, pulp & paper, rubber, soy, and timber — we know that Big Agribusiness is driving deforestation. But they’re not the only ones to blame. Our latest report with the Forests & Finance coalition, “Banking on Biodiversity Collapse,” exposes the financial flows going into 300 forest-risk commodity companies. By financing them, banks are complicit in the destruction of our most critical forests AND violations of human rights. Read the report: https://lnkd.in/dh-xumNN

BREAKING! The second “Banking on Biodiversity Collapse” report is here. Banks have pumped over USD $395 BILLION into agribusiness companies driving tropical #deforestation since 2016. By financing these companies, banks are complicit in the destruction of our most critical forests AND violations of human rights. As the #G20Summit approaches in Brazil this November, we’re calling on heads of state and finance ministers to take immediate action to regulate financial institutions and eliminate financial flows and investments that are driving the destruction.
