We are hard-pressed to think of anything as unappealing as genetically engineered salmon 🤢 and so we extend our heartiest congratulations to North American Marine Alliance, #BlockCorporateSalmon and others who worked to pressure AquaCounty Technologies to stop its production of these genetically engineered "Frankenfish." "Consumer opposition to genetically engineered animals is high in both the US and Canada. Polls show that most Americans believe GE animals for protein production is not an appropriate use of biotechnology. Most consumers won’t eat genetically engineered fish if it is available and 95% of consumers believe genetically engineered food animals should be labeled. You can check out the full story below. A major win for the environment in Argentina, where Tierra del Fuego has officially banned wild kelp harvesting in the province. The new kelp forest protection law safeguards approximately 60% of Argentina’s kelp forests, representing a monumental step forward in safeguarding these vital ecosystems. Congratulations to our partner Por el Mar, whose mission is protecting and conserving Argentina's pristine marine forests, vital ecosystems for global biodiversity. While similar kelp forests have declined by 40% globally over the past half-century, the kelp-rich waters of Patagonia have emerged as a crucial sanctuary for marine life—a climate refugee and a battleground for competing visions of economic development. This is an excellent report from GRAIN on the spectacular growth of the industrial aquaculture industry into new territories. Frontline fishing communities that are directly suffering the consequences of the sector are leading a growing global resistance to these extractive land grabs sold to the public under the guise of addressing world hunger. With industrial aquaculture using up to 6 kgs of wild fish (taken principally from countries in the global south) to produce 1.5 kg of salmon, sea bream, or sea bass, it is doing anything but "feeding the world." Here's an excellent post on the topic of "greenwashing" from our partners at Katheti. With so many confusing and misleading labels out there, the onus is unfortunately on consumers to do their homework. The good news is that Katheti and other other environmental and community groups are fighting back and challenging companies, regulators, and certifiers to develop and adhere to more meaningful health and environmental safeguards.

Many thanks to Kim Druker Stockwell of Women's Survival Guide for her interview with Rauch president Eva Douzinas on the topic of industrial-scale carnivorous fish farming and its consequences to the environment, local economies, and the communities in which they're sited. Stop Salmon Farming, for Good is a life affirming short film about a community in the Northwest of Scotland that stood up to a global salmon farming giant to protect their beaches and seas. It underscores the urgent need for communities to have legal rights and the final say over industrial salmon farm development in Scotland and in any place we call home. The film will be available in February, but you can view the trailer here: https://lnkd.in/dByHfURZ The GSFR | Global Salmon Farming Resistance WildFish

Bravo to Healthy Seas OZON NGO Veronika Mikos and Anastassios Filippides for the incredible work they are doing in both removing and bringing attention to the epidemic of "ghost farms" in Greece. Nearly 20% of the 150+ fish farms their teams inspected between the Ionian Sea and the Saronic Gulf are abandoned - leaving death traps for wildlife and humans. The tremendous cost of clean up is left to underfunded communities or in this case, the philanthropic generosity of Hyundai Motor Europe along with Healthy Seas and Ozon NGO. One has to question why the fish farming industry would be granted a 24x expansion across Greece (from 2,400 acres today to 60,000 coastal acres / 9,800 stremmata to 240,000 stremmata) when so many existing farms are abandoned and the cost of clean up left to others to bear? Please see the links below for the recent profile of their work in Kathimerini and their recent webinar. https://lnkd.in/earrKAcW https://lnkd.in/eMgWPbsw

Thank you to Kim Druker Stockwell of the Women's Survival Guide for spotlighting Eva Douzinas, the work of the Rauch Foundation and its partners in raising awareness about destructive sides of industrial carnivorous fish farming. The U.S. is the largest consumer of farmed salmon in the world. While many states have banned this harmful practice in their state waters (with Maine being a notable exception), the U.S. continues to import farmed fish, supporting an industry that devastates marine environments globally. Nearly all Branzino (sea bass) served in the United States is farm raised and imported.
