A world where every child is read to every day.
About us
Reach Out and Read is an evidence-based nonprofit organization of medical providers who promote early literacy and school readiness in pediatric exam rooms nationwide by giving new books to children and advice to parents about the importance of reading aloud. Reach Out and Read builds on the unique relationship between parents and medical providers to develop critical early reading skills in children, beginning at 6 months of age. Reach Out and Read serves more than 4 million children and their families annually. Reach Out and Read families read together more often, and their children enter kindergarten better prepared to succeed, with larger vocabularies and stronger language skills. During the preschool years, children served by Reach Out and Read score three to six months ahead of their non-Reach Out and Read peers on vocabulary tests. These early foundational language skills help start children on a path of success when they enter school.

And I look for that impact at an inexpensive price so that one can make a real difference.” — Nick Kristof talks about how he chooses #HolidayImpactPrize winners on MSNBC’s Morning Joe. https://lnkd.in/gC_Cufxk

More than 60 percent of the 4.6 million children we serve are BIPOC. Every child, regardless of race, family structure, or socioeconomic status, deserves the resources and relationships essential to learn and thrive — and that includes books that reflect them, their culture, and their communities. Being recognized by The New York Times’ and Nick Kristof’s #HolidayImpactPrize brings us one step closer towards making that world a reality. As a Board Member, funder, and parent, I’m proud to be a champion for Reach Out and Read, a nonprofit dedicated to strengthening families with young children. Through guidance from medical clinicians, Reach Out and Read empowers parents to nurture relationships with their children through the joy of shared reading. Already reaching 4.6 million children ages 5 and under, we have set an ambitious goal to reach 10 million children annually by 2030. Please join me in supporting this incredible work!
“By ‘prescribing’ books during pediatric visits — and giving the books away for free — Reach Out and Read ushers children onto the magic carpet of reading at an early age for an incredibly inexpensive cost.” - Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nick Kristof. Huge news from The New York Times today: Nick Kristof awarded Reach Out and Read the Kristof Impact Initiative Prize. This honor recognizes the transformational impact of our evidence-based model, which gives millions of under-resourced children a better start to life.
