It's been a massive six months since ReefTO kicked off in July this year! We are growing rapidly and planning furiously for a milestone event where we'll bring up to 300 Traditional Owners with inherent Sea Country rights in the Great Barrier Reef together in March 2025. This forum will mark the beginning of 12+ months of engagement with Reef Traditional Owners to understand options and preferences for creating a Sea Country Alliance. We are excited by the incredible program of work we have planned in 2025 to strengthen and elevate the position of Traditional Owners in caring for and preserving the Great Barrier Reef for future generations. But for now, the ReefTO team is signing off for the year! We'll see you again after 6 January 2025, when we’ll be back with renewed energy to pick up where we left off. There are over 70 Traditional Owner groups along the Queensland coastline whose traditional estates extend over the Great Barrier Reef and many more groups whose customary estates form part of the Reef Catchment. The Reef was declared a Marine Park in 1975 and a World Heritage Area in 1981. Since this time, Reef Traditional Owners have been seeking greater recognition of their rights, responsibilities and interests as the traditional custodians of the Great Barrier Reef. The ReefTO Taskforce is an independent, Traditional Owner-led initiative to strengthen and elevate the position of Traditional Owners in caring for, and preserving, the Great Barrier Reef for future generations.
