A study led by Regenstrief researchers Michael Weiner, M.D., MPH, Jennifer Carnahan, M.D., MPH, M.A., and affiliate scientist Joy Lee, PhD, M.S., highlights disparities in mental health care utilization between transgender veterans and cisgender veterans. The findings reveal that transgender veterans with depression use mental health services at significantly higher rates than cisgender veterans, even after accounting for various health factors. The researchers emphasize the need for tailored health system resources to better support transgender veterans. https://lnkd.in/gGdSicjG

A study analyzing NFL Prescription Drug Monitoring Program data from 2021 and 2022 reveals that opioid pain medications were prescribed to less than 3% of NFL players. Instead, over 86% of pain medications prescribed were nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen. The findings highlight significant progress in managing pain safely, reflecting a shift away from opioid use in sports. Regenstrief Institute's Kurt Kroenke, MD, co-author of the study, emphasizes the importance of prioritizing safer pain treatments for athletes. https://lnkd.in/ggxesx8m

I’m so excited that Regenstrief Institute, Inc. has launched a new green initiative: composting throughout the building! Ever since my family lived in New Zealand for 6 months and saw the way much of the country, business, parks, and homes compost, our family has worked to incorporate composting at home and our workplace. Composting helps to reduce landfill trash and the carbon emissions associated with that trash, and it can help improve soil quality in the environment around us. It’s a small step, but it’s something!

Kosali Simon, PhD, M.A., a Regenstrief Institute research scientist and professor at the IU Bloomington O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs, will co-lead an expected $16 million NIH-NIA project focused on improving healthcare delivery for individuals with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. Dr. Simon's research examines how racial matching between providers and patients impacts healthcare use and outcomes. Regenstrief's Nicole Fowler, PhD, and Jennifer Carnahan, M.D., will serve as co-investigators, while Malaz Boustani, M.D., will be a core leader. The project is a collaboration among Regenstrief, IU, University of Chicago and the National Bureau of Economic Research. https://lnkd.in/gD_NxfMZ

The Public Health Emergency Surveillance System (PHESS), created by Regenstrief Institute, IDOH and partners, and now administered by IHIE, is celebrating 20 years of service as a public health strategic resource. Designed to meet the need for a rapid-response infrastructure capable of identifying emerging public health threats, PHESS has been a cornerstone of Indiana's public health strategy since its inception. After nearly 10 years of PHESS operations, Regenstrief transferred the system to the Indiana Health Information Exchange (IHIE) in 2014, which continues to oversee the operational aspects of the health information exchange-based system. https://lnkd.in/gFXyfB2f
