Extreme weather is not partisan, and neither is grid resilience. The NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration's climate data is critical to utilities and their customers. Electric utilities are on-track for all-time highs on capital expenditures, reaching $192B by 2027. Meanwhile, there were 27 confirmed extreme weather events with losses exceeding $1 billion dollars each. We're officially welcoming Isabella Smythe to the team, joining our growing contingent based in Brooklyn, NY! Isabella has a rich background in climate analytics and applied geospatial data science, and has most recently completed her PhD in Sustainable Development from Columbia University which was focused on machine learning approaches to understanding impacts of climate change on agriculture. Her specialty is taking on complex technical challenges one bite size at a time, which is the perfect fit for the magnitude of climate resilience and wildfire challenges we're solving for.

The devastation taking place in Los Angeles is unfathomable. The countless lives, businesses, homes, and memories taken by the destruction of these raging wildfires are absolutely gut-wrenching, and we hope to see the global community rally around the region. The Franklin fire in Malibu has destroyed 4,000 acres and several structures. It has also plunged tens of thousands of residents in the region into darkness, leaving them without power and cellphone communications. The Los Angeles Times provides detailed insights on how the destruction of cellphone towers and other vital infrastructure in the area that has been caught in the path of the inferno is making this fire uniquely difficult. The impacts of fires are multifaceted, and extinguishing them is dually essential to restoring infrastructure services as well as maintaining community safety. https://lnkd.in/et_gi79r

Winter is upon us, and the Great Lakes region is already seeing massive amounts of lake-effect snowfall, with more on the way. While wildfires and hurricanes have the most damaging impact on utilities, heavy snow and blustery winter winds from Nor'easters can have similar impacts on an already overworked power grid.
