🤝 Unlocking Human-AI Synergy: The Next Frontier A recent meta-analysis (https://lnkd.in/ds87siyX) by researchers from MIT highlights some intriguing findings. On average, human-AI teams underperform compared to the best of either humans or AI working alone. However, when humans outperform AI in a task, combining their efforts can yield significant performance gains. Tasks involving creation (e.g., generating content) showcase positive collaboration outcomes, while decision-making tasks often see performance losses. This emphasizes the need to optimize task design to harness the strengths of both humans and AI. . 🔍 A Call for Research and Innovation The study underscores the importance of further research into task-specific collaboration and innovative processes that enhance synergy. This is the key to unlocking AI's potential in solving complex societal challenges. 💡 Let's rethink how we design and deploy human-AI systems. The future of technology lies in collaboration, not competition. #ArtificialIntelligence #HumanAI #Innovation #Collaboration #AIResearch

"To regulate or not to regulate AI?" #Moonshot #research #AI #CERN

Our Senior Researcher, Mira El Kamali, discussed AI opportunities and challenges and how to use it responsibly at Women In Digital Switzerland event. She showcased some of the exciting projects we’re working on at SCAI. https://lnkd.in/e7-MheSF

Breakthrough vs. cognitive manipulation? However amazing AI's persuasive capabilities may be for healthcare (and indeed, across virtually every field imaginable), they also present a significant risk of #mass #cognitive #manipulation. And it raises numerous important questions such as: ➡️How do we maintain #individual #agency in medical decisions (but not only) as AI becomes ubiquitous? ➡️ What #safeguards can prevent the misuse of AI's persuasive power in healthcare? And in general? ➡️ In this new era, what does #cognitive #integrity mean, and how do we protect it? And ultimately: Who decides what is #RIGHT and what is #WRONG? As we are working on an upcoming AI regulation in Switzerland (and everywhere in the world) we now need answers to these questions …. Thoughts? AI’s power to convince is 🤯. I think it could fundamentally reshape #health and #prevention. If it can convince people to abandon conspiracy theories, surely it can convince them to adopt healthier habits?

AI is a tool. It is neither good nor bad. But it is not neutral. Like knives. 🔪 Last week, our Director Isabelle Chappuis was invited to discuss AI regulation and transparency at an event organized by Nadja Braun Binder, Florent Thouvenin, and Liliane Obrecht. The organizing team presented their remarkable work and white papers. Together with Angela Müller from AlgorithmWatch, they discussed the need for greater transparency and emphasized placing human rights at the core of AI—"#safe #by #design." They also highlighted the irreconcilable gap between the lightning-fast pace of AI disruptions and the slow pace of legislation. 🐌 National Councilor Gerhard Andrey brilliantly illustrated how Big Techs are disrupting not only technology but the entire economy. Our worker- and small business-based society is being reshaped, with productivity gains increasingly concentrated among tech giants. In this turmoil, whether you like it or not, #human #transition will be the biggest challenge.

Last year, as generative Artificial Intelligence exploded in popularity, I launched a High-Level Advisory Body to examine how to share the benefits of this extraordinary technology while addressing its challenges. This advisory group was the first of its kind in the AI space – a geographically diverse, gender-balanced group bringing together experts from governments, the private sector, civil society and academia. As they share their Final Report, I commend the breadth of their recommendations, which include creating: ◼️ an International Scientific Panel on AI – to promote common understanding on capabilities, opportunities and risks; ◼️ a Global Dialogue on AI Governance at the UN – to anchor AI governance in international norms and principles, including human rights; ◼️ a Global Fund on AI for the Sustainable Development Goals - to bridge the AI divide; ◼️ an AI Capacity Development Network – to boost AI capacities and expertise, particularly in developing countries; ◼️ a Standards Exchange – to foster technical compatibility; ◼️ a Global Data Framework – to enable flourishing local AI ecosystems, and a small AI Office at the United Nations – to assist in all these initiatives. I fully support these recommendations, which provide a blueprint to build on existing efforts and together, shape an international AI architecture that is inclusive, agile, and effective. https://lnkd.in/e-DKuaSq

#AIRegulation The Australian government has unveiled #mandatory guardrails for high-risk AI, along with a #voluntary safety standard for organizations using AI. These measures aim to strengthen #transparency, #accountability, and #human #oversight in AI systems, particularly those with legal impacts or potential to cause physical harm. ➡️ What’s fantastic is also the promotion of #voluntary #standards to help leaders better assess and manage the potential impacts of AI (human, technological, environmental, business models, etc.). ☹️ PROBLEM? The AI market is in chaos - we call it the „AI Wild West“ : lack of clarity, uninformed decisions, and an alarming gap between companies' good intentions and their actual practices. 😀 SOLUTION? Adopt voluntary standards now for better AI governance. This will boost market trust, improve practices, and ensure AI works in everyone's best interest. At SCAI – Swiss Center for Augmented Intelligence, we are working on it! 😉 Ornella Vaccarelli | Mira El Kamali | Denis Lalanne | Ursula Oesterle | Laura Tocmacov | Philippe Richard | Bobjoseph Mathew | Laurent Sciboz | Jean Hennebert | Elena Mugellini | …
Professor of Emerging Tech, advisor, speaker and co-director of the Human Technology Institute (HTI) at UTS
Exciting news! Yesterday, the Federal Government released two key resources supporting AI guardrails. Both the government's proposals for mandatory rules for high-risk AI and the Australian Voluntary AI Safety Standard have the power to reshape how we realise the benefits of AI. This launch is an important step in all of us being able to better navigate what is currently a confusing and messy AI market while supporting innovation and protecting Australians. 🚀 In my latest piece for The Conversation, I break down why it is so important that we get this right: https://lnkd.in/gppmRrtT Perhaps the best part of yesterday's release is that we don't need to wait for the government to act. As someone who's been knee-deep in this with the team and our partners at UTS Human Technology Institute (we are proud to have contributed to both documents!), I can't stress enough how crucial it is to already start adopting thoughtful, structured approaches to AI use with your teams and across your organisation. Curious about how this might affect your work or daily life? Feel free to reach out! What are your thoughts on these two new sets of guardrails? Finally, congrats and huge thanks to the National AI Centre, Department of Industry, Science and Resources, my incredible fellow safety standard contributors, and my HTI colleagues, especially Stela SOLAR, Donna Forlin, Mona Saadeldin, Anthony Murfett, Aurélie Jacquet, Myfanwy Wallwork, Bill Simpson-Young, Ali Akbari, Liming Zhu, Qinghua Lu, Nikki Stone, Andrew Mastroianni, Jen Bradley, Lauren Perry and Ed Santow. It's a big moment for safe and responsible AI in Australia!
