Good to see serious media finally moving away from the X dumpster fire (as well as Threads, which apparently wants to be X lite). Corey Hutchins

The Reuters Institute journalism, media and technology trends report is out today, written by myself and Federica Cherubini. Here are just a few headlines, a link to the full report + one chart that sums up some of the platform changes we might see. Just four in ten (41%) of our sample of editors, CEOs, and digital executives say they are confident about the prospects for journalism in the year ahead. Stated concerns relate to political polarisation, a rise in attacks on the press, and media capture – all of which in combination are seen as significant threats to journalism’s ability to operate freely. Publishers continue to embrace generative AI this year with the majority of the managers surveyed (87%) saying newsrooms are being fully or somewhat transformed. Beyond more efficient workflows, publishers say they’ll be working on using AI to personalise formats such as turning text into audio (75%), providing automated story summaries (70%) and translations (65%). At the same time, most publishers say they are worried about a significant fall in referrals from search as big tech companies integrate AI overviews and other ‘story-like’ responses to news queries. Most media leaders will prioritise building relationships with the big AI platforms this year as a result. With consumer attention switching to video, publishers say they are planning to put more effort into YouTube (+52 on our net score), TikTok (+48) and Instagram (+43). By contrast, publisher sentiment towards X/Twitter (-68 net score) has worsened considerably this year following the politicisation of the network under Elon Musk. Many have also given up on Facebook (-42 net score) after consistent de-prioritisation of news and a decline in aggregate referrals to news sites of 67% in two years. In terms of newer channels Bluesky (+38) has become a key focus for many while Google Discover (+27 on our net score) has become more important over the last year. here's that chart showing where publishers plan to put more and less effort.
