Almost 100 years ago, noted historian and scholar Carter G. Woodson launched Black History Week, which over time became an officially recognized month in the United States, for the celebration and education of the history and culture of Black People. A vital element of this history is Black American Music ... Jazz, an art form rooted and born of the African American and Afro-Caribbean experience. At SFJAZZ, we are grateful for these opportunities for expanded recognition and celebration. We believe that Black history is everyone’s history… therefore we are continuing in our commitment to honor our history on a daily basis… and strengthen our relationships with Black communities locally and globally. Please join us here at SFJAZZ to celebrate Black heritage, Black experiences, Black voices… ALL YEAR LONG!

Charles Phan (1962-2025) We are in shock and deeply saddened to hear of the loss of iconic Bay Area chef and restaurateur Charles Phan, who passed Monday of cardiac arrest at the age of 62. Owner of the groundbreaking Slanted Door restaurant that popularized the Vietnamese fine dining concept in San Francisco, he operated numerous businesses throughout the Bay Area and we considered him an extended member of the SFJAZZ family for his South restaurant that opened on the ground floor of the SFJAZZ Center in 2013.

We are delighted to announce that Susie Medak, previously the Managing Director of the Berkeley Rep Theatre, has been appointed as the Interim CEO, and will be joining the organization in January. She retired two years ago, having served for 32 years as Managing Director of the Berkeley Rep Theater, where she was a very successful and widely respected leader. Since her retirement, she has served as Interim CEO for several arts organizations including the Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, DC, and McCarter Theatre Center in Princeton, and we are delighted that she will now be working with SFJAZZ over the next few months while we look for a new full-time CEO. “I am honored to step into the Interim CEO role at SFJAZZ,” said Susie Medak. “SFJAZZ is a vital and dynamic institution, and I look forward to collaborating with the Executive Artistic Director, Terence Blanchard, the talented team, board, and community to ensure a seamless transition as the organization continues to thrive in its mission of advancing jazz and enriching lives through this extraordinary art form.” Happy Holidays, we looks forward to seeing you at the SFJAZZ Center soon! -Molly Coye, SFJAZZ Board of Trustees Chair

We want to thank SFJAZZ CEO Gregory Stern for his incredible leadership and guidance over these past 4 1/2 years. He will be stepping down to begin his retirement at the end of the calendar year. As CEO, he led the organization through an immediate and effective response to the closure brought on by the pandemic; a new strategic plan which provides the framework for the future of SFJAZZ; founder transition and succession with Terence Blanchard as the new Executive Artistic Director; the launch and expansion of many Community Engagement initiatives; the continued success of and commitment to SFJAZZ Education programs; the expansion of SFJAZZ at Home; and the continued commitment to innovative artistic presentation, supported by a return of strong ticket sales. SFJAZZ is forever grateful for all of his accomplishments and wish him all the best in retirement.

Last week, the SFJAZZ Center hosted the Wisdom 2.0 Summit, which brings together technology leaders—such as Sam Altman—to explore how we can live mindfully and wisely in modern life, engaging with the great technologies of our age in ways that benefit us. We also hosted the Future of Well-Being, featuring speakers like Dr. Mark Hyman and Sara Gottfried, among others. Wisdom 2.0 is definitely setting the stage for a new type of conference! "It’s not just about adding years to your life, but adding life to your years."
