Congratulations to SKDK President Loren Riegelhaupt on being named one of New York’s 2024 Power Players in Healthcare by PoliticsNY! Loren is invaluable to SKDK, leading the Public Affairs team in New York, co-leading our healthcare vertical, and providing crucial communications support. Loren reflected on the most important lesson in his career thus far: “Lead with empathy but hold everyone accountable. I’ve been very lucky to work with some of the most talented and kind people who use their skills and talents to lift people up while simultaneously expecting great work. Leading by understanding and solving challenges together but also demanding excellence is at the heart of true success. To me, that is fundamental to any individual or organizational success.” https://lnkd.in/epp_xXwa

SKDK was proud to work with Mighty Earth on their newest program, Rewilding America. We look forward to a successful campaign!
🐾 I’m thrilled to announce Mighty Earth’s newest program: Rewilding North America! We assessed the biggest needs and opportunities to drive outsized impact for Nature and climate around the world. One of the greatest was right here at home: restoring extirpated species of wildlife to the enormous landscapes from which they’re missing. For context, when European settlers arrived in North America, they eradicated wildlife and left broken ecosystems in their wake. In early New England, towns held hunts where they drove all the wildlife in a forest to a central point, and slaughtered them. By the mid-1800s, wolves had disappeared from the Northeast. Mountain lions were gone not long thereafter, and even whitetail deer – so common a feature of suburbs today - were almost entirely eradicated. This exterminationist mindset traveled with the settlers as they moved West, shooting, trapping, and poisoning cougars, wolves, bears, lynx, beavers, and others. Once the wildlife was gone, the settlers – and later industrial loggers cleared the forest and ploughed up the prairies. The good news is that over the last century, a great continental rewilding has begun in North America, inspiring a vision of a land once again teeming with wildlife. The great forests of the East have regrown, and white-tailed deer have come back from the brink of extinction to over-population. The renewed natural abundance around is something to celebrate, but it’s also relative: without keystone species like cougars, wolves, and beavers in their natural abundance, these ecosystems remain depleted and out of balance. Lyme disease is encouraged by out-of-control deer populations; and traffic collisions with deer are too common. Nonetheless, this century-long ecological restoration, however incomplete, has created the ingredients for a great rewilding moment, notably abundant forest habitat and prey. To start to restore the missing magic, we’re starting with an effort to restore mountain lions East of the Mississippi River, also known as cougars or catamounts. We’re going to be working with grassroots conservationists and rewilding practitioners, as well as state governments, to make "Paws on the Ground" a reality. I went to Vermont's Green Mountains to meet with local stakeholders and imagine what they'd be like with these magical missing creatures. This is an effort that can succeed regardless of who’s in the White House. Ultimately, we aim not just to rewild the land, but also rewild Americans’ hearts and minds – and give people a sense of the magic of Nature in their backyard. More soon! Thanks Cougar Research Collaborative, PANTHERA, Tom Butler, L. Mark Elbroch, Emily Carrollo, Emily Beverage, Chief Rewilding Officer Alex Armstrong, SKDK, Ben Goldsmith, Clay, Morgan Hook and many others!
