It's wonderful to see two of our award winners on the front page of the Concord Monitor as Hometown Heroes, profiled by David Brooks! "Preserving land from development is all about woods and streams and birds and beasts. That’s the fun part. But it’s also about laws and contracts and tax rules and finance. That’s the boring part – yet without it, the woods and beasts are in trouble. This is why the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests gave two major awards this fall to attorneys who have spent decades helping create and maintain the legal and financial structures which preserve land: The President’s Award to Thomas Masland of Canterbury, and Conservationist of the Year to Bob Wells of Hopkinton." https://lnkd.in/ejnwgEHm

In an op-ed for the Union Leader, Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests President Jack Savage defends sustainable forest management on public lands like the White Mountain National Forest. Responding to a Vermont-based lawsuit challenging timber harvests, Savage highlights the importance of responsible stewardship and warns against litigation that undermines efforts to promote forest health, diversity, and resilience in New Hampshire. Earlier this month, we celebrated the completion of the trail work at Mount Major with a ribbon cutting ceremony honoring the partners, donors, trail builders, Forest Society staff, and everyone that made the $325,000-project happen. The ceremony included Executive Councilor Joe Kenney, trail creator and builder Erin Amadon, owner of Town 4 Trails Services, and Alton Town Administrator Ryan Heath. It was followed by a public hike to the summit. The ambitious trail project to greatly improve the sustainability of Mount Major's Main Trail, the most popular route up and down the mountain, lasted three months. The Forest Society teamed up with Town 4 Trails Services and OBP Trailworks to construct the sustainable trail, which took the place of about 1/3 mile of the existing Main/Blue Trail. Thanks to WMUR for sharing the story! https://lnkd.in/e_S_8HMA

The renovation of the Carriage Barn at The Rocks received the NH Energy Week's “Project of the Year: Energy Champion Award” for 2024 on May 10! Thanks to the Community Development Finance Authority for our nomination. The Forest Society's Susanne Kibler-Hacker (left), Senior Philanthropy Advisor, and Anne Truslow (right), VP for Development, accepted the award last week. The Forest Society received $300,000 in tax credits from the CDFA in 2023, which were used to renovate the Carriage Barn at The Rocks in Bethlehem. The renovation retained the historic exterior of the building and converted the interior into a net-zero energy-efficient structure powered by geothermal and solar photovoltaic systems. Congratulations to our own Dave Anderson, senior director of education, who will be Plymouth State University's Graduate Commencement keynote speaker and is the 2024 recipient of the Granite State Award! 🎓
Meet Dave Anderson '85, the Graduate Commencement keynote speaker and the 2024 recipient of the Granite State Award from Plymouth State University. Since the 1980s, Dave has been immersed in natural resource conservation, from climbing Osprey nest trees while studying Natural Science/Environmental Biology as an undergrad to his current role as Senior Director of Education at SOCIETY FOR THE PROTECTION OF NH FORESTS. He currently lives on a 54-acre Tree Farm, embodying the wisdom of Yankee tradition: "Experience is such a dear teacher... fools will learn by no other." He's a renowned communicator, with columns in the New Hampshire Sunday News and Forest Notes magazine, and co-hosts "Something Wild" on NHPR. Dave's passion for land conservation and forestry has earned him prestigious awards, but his true joy lies in educating others about the importance of stewardship. The Graduate Ceremony will be held on Friday, May 10 at 6pm in AllWell North. For more information visit Plymouth.edu/commencement. #plymouthstatealumni #psugrad24
