🌍 European Mission Soil Week 2024 🌱 The Horizon Europe Mission ‘A Soil Deal for Europe’ (Mission Soil) is holding the second edition of the European Mission Soil Week on 12-13 November 2024 in Brussels, Belgium at the BluePoint Brussels. Soil health is high on the EU political agenda, recognized as crucial for achieving the goals of the Green Deal and other policies, including climate neutrality, halting desertification, land degradation, and reversing biodiversity loss. This annual event is a major European gathering that unites the soil community—including researchers, policymakers, farmers, businesses, and the general public—to address challenges, share opportunities, and mobilize for soil protection and restoration. SOILCRATES is proud to participate in this key event, Emiel Elferink contributed to the session "Enablers and challenges for a sustainable deployment of innovative solutions from living labs." Emiel highlighted how soil sustainability must extend "beyond the farm and into the boardroom," involving farmers, businesses, governments, educators, and scientists alike. Here’s how SOILCRATES is making this vision a reality: 📚 Boosting soil literacy: Through interactive Living Labs, we foster learning and dialogue, while broader communication and educational tools reach diverse audiences with the latest soil health insights. 🤝 Engagement at all levels: Our regional events, including field trips, open days, and workshops, offer hands-on learning for all stakeholders, encouraging inspiration and knowledge-sharing. 📖 Educational resources: We’re creating a soil health syllabus and catalog of effective practices focused on cropping diversity, irrigation, and soil fertilization. 📆 Soil Health Week: Imagine a week-long soil festival in each region—where citizens, professionals, and leaders celebrate soil health with engaging events, inspiring speakers, and hands-on activities. From October 7th to 9th, 2024, over 45 leading experts, researchers, and partners gathered in Leeuwarden, Netherlands, to officially launch the SOILCRATES project. This event marked a key milestone, bringing together 21 partners to collaborate on innovative strategies for sustainable soil management. The project’s centerpiece is the creation of four Living Labs in the Netherlands, France, Ireland, and Spain. These labs will act as innovation hubs, where stakeholders work together to address soil health challenges, improve biodiversity, and optimize crop conditions. As part of the event, participants had the chance to visit Jan Woudstra’s innovative dairy farm in Menaldum. This farm showcases sustainable practices, including a forage hedge to enhance biodiversity and soil health, and an Agricycling composting technique that transforms grass into nutrient-rich soil. Jan’s approach, reducing chemical inputs while boosting productivity, aligns perfectly with the project’s goals of sustainable farming and environmental stewardship.
