Last Tuesday, our CEO Guy Kamgaing was at the NextV conference in Nairobi to speak alongside Aggrey Mugisha, CEO of Albayan Media Limited and Myke Mwai, Head of Content at StarTimes on the ‘Monetisation of local content on digital platforms’ panel, moderated by Betty Kiptum. During the discussion, Guy highlighted the importance of producing relatable and hyper-localised content for African consumers who are hungry for stories that resonate with their communities and everyday lives. “Ultimately, if people like what they see, they are going to pay for it”, Guy commented while explaining StarNews Mobile's strategy for monetising local content on the platform. Guy also had the chance to touch down on other points that make content more attractive to the youth, like the reliance on short form videos and making content more suitable for mobile consumption. Thank you to Dataxis for organising the event and shedding light on the importance of content creation in the media landscape today

While the Nigerian creative economy is well known to be a major contributor to the country’s GDP, this recent @Forbes Africa piece dives deeper into the industry, highlighting a specific segment that has seen a significant uptick in popularity and audience engagement. According to the article, recent data now ranks ‘skit-making’ as the third-largest entertainment industry in the country, with a net worth exceeding ₦50 billion ($31.2 million). To understand what it takes to succeed in this industry, @Forbes Africa conducted interviews with popular skit-makers who all stressed on two crucial factors; namely the importance of creating relatable content and the ability to connect with the audience in a meaningful way. As a community-driven platform that fosters unique bonds between creators and their fans, StarNews Mobile is uniquely positioned to empower skit-makers and other creators on the platform to reach their full potential. We encourage all creators in Nigeria to showcase their creativity and personalized narratives on our platform, where they will be able to connect with their target audience more effectively.
