One of the coolest things about my job is that I get to share what I know while learning something new every day, especially about the contexts of other countries beyond Viet Nam. Recently, my team at Development Intelligence Lab dived into what Cambodian non-government experts think about Australia’s role in development cooperation in the country. Here are some interesting takeaways: - Climate change is seen as the biggest challenge for development, but opinions are divided on how Australia is tackling it. Meanwhile, they feel Australia’s strength lies in agriculture, making it a better fit for collaboration than areas like trade or infrastructure. - Cambodian experts are more worried about the impact of great power rivalry on development than other Southeast Asian countries. - There’s a call for more attention to human capital development—from both Cambodia’s government and partners like Australia. It’s always fascinating to hear these perspectives and think about how partnerships can evolve. Would love to hear your thoughts!
🇰🇭🇦🇺 Pulse Check x Cambodia report just launched! Curious to know what experts from Cambodia really think of Australia’s development cooperation in their country? Here’s what 40+ Cambodian development and foreign policy professionals have to say: https://lnkd.in/gs8JP9Cf The Lab’s work would not be possible without the time, generosity, and deep insight of each of the experts who participated in the Pulse Check x Cambodia. We thank you wholeheartedly. This is one part of the Lab’s larger Pulse Check x Southeast Asia project, where we ask 360+ top, local, non-government experts across Southeast Asia what they would do if they were in charge of Australia’s development program.

The theme of the 3rd Africa Media Convention (AMC2024), "The Africa We Want: Enhancing Freedom, Innovation, and Sustainability in a Dynamic Media," emphasizes the crucial role of media in climate justice. With over 500 African editors, journalists, and media stakeholders gathered in Ghana, key thoughts include: ### Role of Media in Climate Justice 1. Raising Awareness: Highlighting the disproportionate impacts of climate change on vulnerable communities through accurate and compelling reporting. 2. Advocacy and Accountability: Holding governments and corporations accountable through investigative journalism, ensuring they protect frontline communities. 3. Information Dissemination: Providing reliable and accessible information to empower communities to make informed environmental decisions. 4. Framing the Narrative: Shaping public discourse to prioritize justice, equity, and sustainability over purely economic or technological solutions. ### Challenges and Opportunities 1. Press Freedom: Ensuring journalists can report freely on environmental issues without fear of censorship. 2. Innovation in Reporting: Using new technologies and innovative techniques like digital storytelling and data journalism to enhance climate reporting. 3. Capacity Strengthening: Providing continuous training for journalists to report accurately on complex climate issues. 4. Collaboration: Enhancing climate reporting through partnerships between media, civil society, and academic institutions. 5. Policy Influence: Keeping climate justice issues in the public eye to pressure policymakers to implement and enforce protective frameworks. The convention underscores the transformative potential of African media in advocating for equitable and effective climate policies, stressing that accurate reporting and accountability are essential for a just and sustainable future.

A few weeks have passed since the organization of the "SDG Cooperation Forum: Private Sector for Sustainable Development." During this time, we have been working with the messages and arguments presented both on stage and behind the scenes. Here are three key takeaways: 📌 Business is the driving force of Sustainable Development, but in our country, both at the level of the population and the elites, there is still a prejudice about the exclusively financial motivation of entrepreneurs. Yes, without profit, business loses its purpose, but it is also the most interested stakeholder in the comprehensive development of the country and the well-being of its residents – its employees and consumers. Until this worldview is formed in society, many entrepreneurs do not prioritize the implementation of Sustainable Development principles in their strategies. 📌 In the process of Moldova's European integration, it is in the interest of businesses to implement ESG principles. Without this, access and partnership in the European market may be limited in the coming years. European companies are already highly dependent on the demand for Sustainability from consumers and civil society, and non-financial reporting is becoming mandatory for an increasing number of companies. Along the product chain, these requirements are transmitted to suppliers, including foreign ones, which is a serious challenge for Moldovan companies as well. 📌 The promotion of ESG in Moldova is taking its first steps – this is evidenced by the increased activity of several Associations of foreign investors in training member companies and their local suppliers. However, priorities have not yet been outlined in state policy, which could serve as additional motivation for businesses. Our goal was not just to organize an event with an informational component but to give an impulse to communication between business, government and international partners in the public field. The campaign succeeded and will continue after the second round of elections. The main conclusion, however, is that it is necessary to continue to motivate stakeholders to speak the same language and outline goals and interests that are clear to them and the general public.
👥 In early October, PARC Communications organised the ‘SDG Cooperation Forum. Private Sector for Sustainable Development’. The event and the accompanying communications campaign were organised on the initiative of ONU Moldova and the Foreign Investors Association in the Republic of Moldova in partnership with the Government of the Republic of Moldova and key stakeholders from public authorities, civil society and the private sector from all sectors. 👉 We invite you to explore the presentations of the speakers on the website www.sdgmoldova.org 🚀 The PR campaign is still ongoing – we are preparing videos and interviews with private companies that presented their success stories at the Forum in implementing Sustainable Development Goals. These stories could serve as inspiration for other private businesses in the country.

MAKI+Fiesta, taking place on August 23-24, 2024 in Quezon City, Philippines is not just another media festival—it's an innovative effort to expand the conversation around free expression and democracy in the Philippines. Organised by IMS and three of our media partners PumaPodcast, Fyt Media, and Probe Productions, in partnership with Quezon City Government and University of the Philippines, this event aims to demonstrate that these values are critical for everyone, far beyond the realms of journalism or government. The significance of this initiative lies in its approach to framing free expression and democracy not merely as ideals, but as the essential foundation and driving force behind a thriving creative economy. In a country that aspires to be competitive on a global stage, understanding the importance of these values is crucial. Without them, creativity and innovation are stifled, which, in turn, hampers economic growth. MAKI+Fiesta is designed to make this connection clear. Through a series of sessions—including keynotes, workshops, panel discussions, and performances—the festival illustrates how freedom, rights, and democracy are the fuel that powers the creative industries. These aren't just issues for journalists—they're crucial to artists, technologists, and anyone engaged in creative work. By showcasing how these values underpin a dynamic and flourishing creative economy, MAKI+Fiesta underscores the need to protect and promote them across all sectors. This approach by IMS’s partners in the Philippines is a forward-thinking model for how free expression and democracy can be integrated into the creative economy. It’s a testament to how these values, when actively supported and championed, can drive both cultural and economic progress in the country. Detailed programme: https://lnkd.in/d7gbWBVC

New week, new thoughts ! Let's talk about local content For companies setting up in a new country, integrating local content into their strategy is an essential lever for long-term success. Local content goes far beyond language adaptation. It's about collaborating with local communities, leveraging local talent, and integrating the host country's culture into every aspect of the business. This not only ensures compliance with local regulations, but also creates genuine shared value with stakeholders. 💡 Why is this crucial? Strengthen legitimacy: by becoming a committed and responsible player in local economic development. Improve relations with the authorities: by demonstrating a willingness to invest in local development. Reduce risks: by promoting greater acceptance and integration of projects within communities. Setting up in a new country shouldn't just be about extracting resources, but about building bridges and participating in the sustainable development of territories. 🌱 Excellent week !
