Last week, I shared key insights from the SportsTechX 2024 Report.⁣ ⁣ Today, I’m diving into M&A trends in sports tech—a dynamic and rapidly evolving space.⁣ ⁣ 𝐌&𝐀 𝐢𝐧 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐬: $𝟑𝟕𝐁+ 𝐢𝐧 𝐃𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒⁣ Though activity has slowed, the size of deals has surged, with total M&A volume in sports tech surpassing $37 billion—nearly doubling 2023’s top 10 transactions, which totaled just over $20 billion.⁣ ⁣ Purpose of the Deals:⁣ 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯. 𝘋𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯. 𝘚𝘺𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘺 𝘊𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯.⁣ ⁣ Acquirers are pursuing vertical integrations—targeting suppliers (backward) or distributors (forward)—and horizontal mergers with competitors at similar stages in the supply chain.⁣ ⁣ One standout example is svexa’s acquisition of Zone7 and Kollektiv. Having followed svexa for some time, this move reaffirms their vision of leveraging sports as a global force for positive change. There are huge opportunities for technology and innovation to create an impact on the Mass Participation Industry and we can’t wait for the culmination of the inaugural GSIC powered by Microsoft MPW Innovation Challenge next week at MPW24. In August we called for “problem statements” from the industry and recieved 41 from the likes of World Athletics, Chicago Event Management, London Marathon Events, njuko, International Orienteering Federation (IOF) and Run Calgary. These were curated to 12 problems and shared with tech providers and startups to provide potential solutions. See the problem statements through the link in the comments below. We were delighted to receive 52 submissions from 19 countries. After a two round judging process we are excited to have invited 10 finalists to share their solutions with delegates and potential investors at MPW24 in Ho Chi Minh City next Friday afternoon.
