Biomanufacturing has been gaining significant momentum, but what are the keys to unlocking its full potential? Our report with Boston Consulting Group (BCG) highlights three interconnected factors: Scale, Strains, and Demand. Together, they can drive a virtuous cycle that lowers costs, expands adoption, and transforms industries. Scale: Moving from pharma-scale (<100,000 liters) to megascale (2 million liters) can reduce production costs by up to 50% for existing strains. Strains: Optimizing strains for scale, rather than just the lab, is critical to unlocking cost reductions. Demand: Achieving price parity with incumbent technologies opens the door to mass markets, from specialty chemicals to food and beyond. When combined, advancements in scale, strains, and demand could reduce production costs by up to 90%—helping biomanufacturing achieve or surpass cost parity with traditional methods. The market could grow to $200 billion by 2040, provided the necessary infrastructure and innovation are in place. Governments are working to transition from fossil-carbon to bio-carbon economies — built on renewable biological resources and scientific innovation — to address climate change and resource depletion. But how do we measure progress? A new study, “A Global Patent Dataset of Bioeconomy-Related Inventions” by Dr. Lukas Kriesch and Dr. Sebastian Losacker, published in Nature Magazine, uses AI and available patent data to map the bioeconomy’s technological landscape. By analyzing patents — a key indicator of innovation — the study identifies bioeconomy-related inventions and uncovers emerging technological trends. The result is a rich, visual map showcasing where bioeconomy innovation is thriving, from fermentation equipment to biodegradable materials, animal nutrition, and beyond. This approach provides policymakers, researchers, and industry leaders with a powerful dataset to monitor progress and guide decisions toward a more sustainable future. 2024 was a big year for the Synonym team. From expanding our team to building strategic partnerships and advancing key infrastructure projects, we’ve made big strides in empowering the global bioeconomy. As we wrap up 2024, we wanted to share some highlights from this impactful year: Our Team: - We nearly doubled our team and welcomed many new team members across all functions - engineering, business development, and digital product. - Though we are a distributed organization, we came together as a team in NYC, Montreal, Tampa to gather for offsites. Partnerships and Projects: - We joined the iFAB Tech Hub, which is making Illinois the epicenter for biomanufacturing and precision fermentation. - With iFAB, we secured a major government grant of $51M from the U.S. Economic Development Administration to upgrade and expand existing facilities to allow for more companies to commercialize precision fermentation technologies and increase production capacity. - We announced a key partnership with Primient and shared that our first joint project will be iPROOF, a state-of-the-art, 32,000L+ fermentation scale-up facility in Illinois (USA) that we expect to be operational in 2026. -The United States Department of Defense awarded our team $1.89M as part of the Distributed Bioindustrial Manufacturing Program (DBIMP). This funding supports our efforts to rehabilitate or build precision fermentation facilities in key regions, bolstering national security and the U.S. bioeconomy. - In partnership with the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), Jean-Francois Bobier and the Deep Tech team, we released a report, which has received thousands of downloads, exploring the $200 billion opportunity for precision fermented ingredients by 2040. Platform: - We developed numerous custom TEAs, enabling companies of all sizes to evaluate bioproduction processes with greater speed and precision than ever before. - We introduced our CMO matching product, connecting companies with the right contract manufacturing organizations to scale their operations effectively. Advocacy and Engagement: - We participated in key domestic and global events, including DoD Biomanufacturing Day, Climate Group Week NYC, SynBioBeta, Biofabricate and more to advance the industry. - We engaged with policymakers and industry leaders, including many trips to DC and Illinois to meet with key stakeholders for the bioeconomy. As we close out this year, we want to thank our team, partners, and the broader bioeconomy community for your support and collaboration. Here’s to continuing the momentum into 2025. Which markets should we prioritize to unlock the full potential of precision fermentation? In our latest report with Boston Consulting Group (BCG), we identified a clear path forward: focus on higher-margin, lower-volume molecules first. By 2040, scaling up industrial precision fermentation could represent a $200 billion opportunity across specialty chemicals, food, and chemical precursor markets. Based on unit economics, the specialty chemicals segment offers the most promising near-term opportunities, followed by food and then chemical precursors. Synonym has the expertise to help you dig into the unit economics of your biomanufacturing process and build a strategy for commercial success. Get in touch with our team at contact@synonym.bio learn how we can support your journey.
