2024 AIA President. HOK Architect. Cornell Trustee. Detroit Daughter. Ingenuity Chicago Board Chair.

This is the week of Thanksgiving in the U.S. I happen to be in South Korea at the moment, and my heart is filled with gratitude because of the kindness and generosity of my friends here. Yesterday, I spent an amazing day with my Cornell Architecture crew and the AIA South Korea section of AIA International. Today, I received an incredible surprise from the Korean Institute of Architects (KIA) President, Young Keun HAN. He presented me with Honorary Fellowship of KIA. The significance of this moment is beyond what words can fully describe. He told me that I have become part of the KIA family. I will forever cherish this memory and remain grateful for the inclusion in their community. Now, I must figure out when I can make my way back to visit again. This is a truly remarkable place. There is much to be thankful for from this side of the world and all the way back home. I’d like to thank our now 99,000+ AIA members for entrusting me to represent them this year. I would also like to thank my firm (HOK) for supporting my time in office at AIA, as well as my previous time serving NOMA. I was first asked to embark upon this association leadership journey in 2016. By the time I complete my service on the AIA Strategic Council in late 2025, I will have dedicated nine consecutive years of my life to advancing the profession of architecture through board leadership at NOMA and AIA. I am grateful for the opportunity to bring my perspective to local, national and global conversations about the built environment. It has truly been an honor. Kamsahamnida 감사합니다 (“Thank You” in Korean) #MoreIn24Monday #KND4AIA #100Week50

  • Have you heard about the ECHO Project? 🌱 It’s a game-changer for embodied carbon reporting in the built environment! ECHO (Embodied Carbon Harmonization and Optimization) is simplifying how we measure and reduce #EmbodiedCarbon emissions by creating a consistent way to define and calculate embodied carbon standards across certifications like #LEED and the Living Building Challenge (Living Future). It also includes decarbonization pledges from ASLA, ASCE, AGC, ASHRAE, and more, along with AIA’s 2030 and the Materials Pledge. This collaborative effort is boosting data sharing, consistency, and action—making decarbonization goals more achievable for everyone. Fun fact: the ECHO project received the Malcolm Lewis IMPACT Award at Greenbuild, where AIA staff attended! 🏆 Check out our newly-released AIA 2030 Commitment By the Numbers report here: https://bit.ly/3B6lDtZ Watch this video to get an overview of the ECHO Project: https://bit.ly/3CHWFSn #Architecture #Sustainability #ClimateAction

  • In contemporary architectural practice, lighting transcends mere functionality—it becomes a critical design language that sculpts spatial experience. Each luminaire is a nuanced design element that creates a complex interplay of color temperature, mounting height, and optical characteristics. Modern lighting solutions like RAB Lighting's BOA series exemplify this design philosophy, offering multiple variations that can transform traditional spaces. Linear lighting emerges as a powerful design tool, allowing architects to create compelling visuals. The most refined lighting designs recognize that illumination isn’t about brightness, but about creating atmosphere, highlighting architectural geometries, and enhancing the qualities of a space. Proud of The American Institute of Architects (AIA) and their leadership and engagement on this global stage. Intelligent and strategic planning, as we head into 2025 (with actions and policies that improve the quality of the environment and the integrity of our building legacy), along with a broad tent that allows us to be less myopic in our industry, are both critically important. Capitalizing on infrastructural investments in the US and sharing intelligent design insights at #COP29, the AIA is truly providing me with optimism as we close out 2024. In addition, the ABI broke the 50 mark in October… showing additional signs of economic strength and emergence from inflationary pressures, as was anticipated throughout this year. Good design is good business and leaving the world a healthier place for future generations is ethically aligned with architectural practice. Full stop. Thanks AIA! We are all in this together. #designexcellence #aia #electrification #decarbonize #aec #gooddesign #environment #sustainability #spaceshipearth #buckyfuller

For the fourth year in a row, AIA leadership is advocating for architects at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (#COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan. This past week I joined our delegation at #COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan. It was my third time attending this climate conference and it definitely felt different attending so soon after the election. Everyone there was still filled with determination and focused on the change that is needed, but the terminology used was different. The common phrase was that the work must be done at the sub-national level. We will continue to focus on the needs of our members at the local and state level and the relationship that The American Institute of Architects (AIA) has built with the US Conference of Mayors will be more important than ever. Our President Kimberly Dowdell spoke on several panels and continued to answer the question of “what do architects have to do with climate action?” It was a reminder that we still have more work to do explaining the role of architects and how their work impacts communities. Thanks to Derek Washam for celebrating your birthday with us last week and continuing to represent AIA for week two and good luck to our 2026 President Illya Azaroff, FAIA who joins the delegation this week and has several speaking engagements to showcase AIA’s role in advancing our climate work. #leadership #architects #climateaction
