Former Executive Director of The Bronx Defenders, Justine Olderman, published an op-ed in Inquest yesterday summarizing what over 25 years in public defense reveals - that pretrial detention is dehumanizing, senseless, and, ultimately, unconstitutional. It’s time to end it. Read more about the need to abolish pretrial confinement at bxd.pub/InquestJan25
About us
The Bronx Defenders provides innovative, holistic, and client-centered criminal defense, family defense, civil legal services, social work support and advocacy to indigent people of the Bronx. Today, our staff of over 400 represents nearly 20,000 individuals each year and reaches hundreds more through outreach programs and community legal education. In the Bronx and beyond, The Bronx Defenders promotes justice in low-income communities by keeping families together. We look beyond individual cases and use community education, leadership development, impact litigation, and legislative reform to challenge entrenched problems that drive individuals into the justice system. We operate on multiple levels: as a provider of Holistic Defense working one-on-one with clients and families; as a community resource; and as a force for systemic change advocating with policymakers. We seek partnerships with community-based providers and leverage their expertise to ensure that our clients’ expressed needs are addressed. We also rely upon our deep connections to community members to alert us to emerging trends that directly impact our clients’ well-being. bxd.pub/m/home

"Mayor Adam’s brazen suspension of [Local Law 42] is not only undemocratic and unlawful, but it sends an unmistakable message to the people we represent that their lives do not matter to this administration,” said our own Meghna Philip. Mayor Adams has been abusing his emergency powers to suspend the implementation of Local Law 42, which would end solitary confinement in city jails and counteract the rampant abuse faced by those incarcerated at Rikers. Solitary confinement creates devastating physical and mental health outcomes, including death, and only serves to compound the mental health crisis in the city’s jails. That's why Local Law 42 was passed in the first place, and that's why the City Council and Public Advocate filed a lawsuit against Mayor Adams for his abuse of power. The Bronx Defenders filed an amicus brief in support, alongside Brooklyn Defenders, Neighborhood Defender Service, Queens Defenders, and New York County Defender Services. No matter what Mayor Adams tries next, we'll continue doing everything we can to end the practice of solitary confinement in our city jails once and for all. https://lnkd.in/e_8Ykwz3

Families in the Bronx can face the threat of separation from their newborns simply because they lack access to essentials like diapers or a car seat. This is unfair and unjust. The Bronx Defenders' passionate attorneys, social workers, and advocates work every day to ensure babies can stay with their parents in safe and loving homes. On #GivingTuesday, please join us in helping keep families together! Your support can provide life-changing essentials and prevent discriminatory separations! Let’s ensure every child has the opportunity to grow in a stable, nurturing home! https://bxd.pub/40ZFZQl

In 2004, BxD hosted a simple Thanksgiving potluck for staff and community members who didn’t have any other place to go. It was a rare moment of gathering not spurred by legal crisis or the courts, but a different kind of need. In the years since, the potluck has grown into an annual event that we call “Dining with Defenders.” With the help of The Latino Restaurant Association, Blend restaurant, and Grubhub, we were able to take the tradition to new heights this year. Yesterday, we served 600 Thanksgiving meals—the most we’ve ever served. We’re grateful to represent the Bronx, a place called home by some of the most vibrant, resilient, and remarkable people in the world. From our community to yours, happy holidays.

The holidays are a time for happiness and connection, but for too many families, this time can be challenging, particularly for the people we represent. Through our Client Emergency Fund (CEF), we’re happy to relaunch our Holiday Gift Drive this year to provide gifts for children, delivered directly to their homes! Last year, more than 500 gifts were given to families in need—and we’re hoping for more this year. You can help by: 1️⃣ Sharing our gift drive link: https://lnkd.in/g-EYEfuy 2️⃣ Purchasing a gift from our Wishlist Let’s work together to provide joy, warmth and connection this holiday season!

Congratulations, Karla Ostolaza! ✨ 🎉
Feeling honored and grateful to have accepted the Robert A. Katzmann Distinguished Fellows Award on behalf of the inaugural class of fellows during the Immigrant Justice Corps 10th Anniversary Celebration. Reuniting with some of the fiercest and brightest advocates for immigrant justice, including my fellow Bronx Defenders Nhu-Y Ngo and Katherine Kim, has left me re-energized for the fight ahead. I’m also deeply inspired by the vision and dedication of the late Judge Katzmann and all the IJC champions, including the members of the Katzmann study group, IJC board members, and IJC staff who have worked tirelessly over the years to expand access to representation to immigrants across the country. A special highlight of the evening was receiving the award from the brilliant Alina Das, whose work and leadership continue to inspire us all. Thank you to everyone who made this event such a tremendous success. This moment is not just a celebration but a powerful reminder of the strength of our community. Onward!

The Sing Sing Chronicles is a four-part series that builds on decades of investigative reporting from Dateline NBC Producer Dan Slepian and exposes the injustice of five different cases of wrongful conviction at Sing Sing Correctional Facility. The documentary features BxD Board Chair Earl Ward's client JJ Velazquez who was recently exonerated. Don’t miss this special two-night event from Director Dawn Porter this Saturday and Sunday at 9pm ET on MSNBC.

Karla Ostolaza, Managing Director of BxD's Immigration Practice, is being honored as a Distinguished Fellow of Immigrant Justice Corps tonight, accepting the award on behalf of IJC's inaugural 2014 class! We're proud of Karla's tireless commitment to providing excellent legal counsel to New York City's immigrants.
Our next 10th Anniversary honor is the Robert A. Katzmann Distinguished Fellowship Award, celebrating the accomplishments of IJC alumni throughout their careers. The award commemorates the guiding principles of IJC - fairness, due process, and the life-saving impact of quality legal representation - shaped greatly by the late Judge Robert A. Katzmann. The award also looks to recognize the various roles advocates can play in the pursuit of systems change. IJC’s inaugural class of 2014, embarked on a journey to provide quality legal counsel to thousands of New York City immigrants in need. At our 2024 Gala last night, we celebrated the incredible staff and sponsors who make The Bronx Defenders what it is: an interdisciplinary team of advocates focused not only on defending the people of the Bronx from the unjust outcomes of the legal system, but also on transforming the system itself. Thank you to our host Desus Nice, our wonderful guests, and our honorees: Liz Garbus and Dan Cogan, Wang Hecker LLP, Ovative Group, and Josie Duffy Rice.
