About us

The Barnes Family started DAISY in 1999 to say a profound thank you to nurses for the extraordinary skill and compassion they provide patients and families every day. Our experience with nurses during son Patrick Barnes' eight week hospitalization showed us that direct care nurses do super-human work that is rarely recognized. We had no idea that today, more than 5,000 healthcare facilities and schools of nursing in all 50 states and 32 other countries and territories would honor their nurses all year long with The DAISY Award. Over 2,100,000 nominations have been written, describing how a nurse has impacted a patient or family. Clearly, the Barnes Family are not the only people compelled to say thank you to nurses! The strategic value of this kind of meaningful recognition is now being proven in research study after study. Impacts include contribution to a healthy work environment, nurse satisfaction, compassion satisfaction, patient satisfaction, and cultural transformation. It's remarkable what happens when a healthcare organization focuses some attention on all the good that's going on. We also honor nursing students with The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing Students and nursing faculty with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing Faculty. Through our J. Patrick Barnes Grants, we support nursing research and EBP projects with grants to nurses.

  • Today, we would like to highlight DAISY Honoree Joseph Garcia! During one unforgettable night, Joe cared for a terminally ill patient, preparing for her final moments. Teaming up with a respiratory therapist, he arranged for her to watch the sunrise one last time from the atrium—sharing a poignant moment with her son. Despite the demands of his shift, Joe went above and beyond, showing extraordinary empathy and kindness. His act of compassion left a lasting mark on everyone who witnessed it. Congratulations, Joe! • Today, we would like to highlight DAISY Honoree Haily Lisheron! This nomination story is specific to the holiday season; we thought this would be the perfect time to share it. A patient who was a beloved community figure who annually assumed the role of Santa Claus was having to go into open heart surgery. The protocol was that it was necessary to shave his beard, which is his signature feature. Understanding how much his beard meant to him for his Santa Claus persona, Haily worked with the surgical team to find a solution that preserved his beard and ensured a safe surgery. Haily’s compassionate ingenuity protected a patient’s health and identity, spreading joy beyond hospital walls. And she did all this while mentoring a new nurse, showing by example what extraordinary compassionate care looks like. Congratulations, Haily! Sad to share this news...

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Marie Manthey, an extraordinary person, and the founder of Creative Health Care Management. Marie was a trailblazer in the nursing field and is widely acknowledged as one of the founders of Primary Nursing. Her groundbreaking work and visionary leadership continue to inspire all of us who are fortunate enough to be part of the nursing community. In 2015, Marie was honored as a Living Legend by the American Academy of Nursing, a title she truly earned for her unwavering commitment to advancing the profession. Marie is also known for her Nursing Salon’s which she routinely hosted at her home. With no set agenda, the Salons gave participants the opportunity to share a meal and openly discuss what was on their mind. (https://lnkd.in/eK6Dhk5X) Marie’s legacy will live on through the many nurses she inspired, the systems she created, and the lives she touched. We are profoundly grateful for her contributions, and her impact will never be forgotten. ❤️ A memorial service in honor of Marie will be planned for the Spring of 2025. Further details will be shared as soon as they are available.
