Delighted to have been invited to UN Women’s intimate launch of its 2024 Gender Snapshot at Parliament today, hosted by Kate Osborne MP. This is an “annual temperature check” by the UN, which is the sixth update of its kind. The headline, perhaps unsurprisingly, is that 2024 has been a “tapestry of progress and struggles”. The report isn’t just about the UK’s 5th Sustainable Development Goal (Gender Equality) but how gender equity relates to all other 16 goals. Thank you Tabitha Morton and the panelists from government bodies and civil society for an insightful event with equal frustrations and hopefulness. UN Women events are both crucial and special - and wonderful today that I met new friends (both self-starting businesswomen Jen Kaarlo-Mendenhall and Dr Sujitha Selvarajah). A huge HUGE amount of experiences shared and advice given, in the Gender Snapshot and beyond. Whilst I will paste the link to the report below, here are some of my key takeaway notes from the Snapshot global research: It will take 137 years to end poverty among women globally if we don’t act now 48 million more women face food insecurity and hunger than men Every day, 800 women die from pregnancy and childbirth related causes - crucial to provide mental healthy services too to ensure women’s rights are met 119.3 million girls remain out of school globally 54% of countries do not have laws that define rape as a lack of freely given consent Child marriage will continue until 2092 unless we take action Women and girls spend 250 million hours per day on water collection - this is 3x more time than men and boys. In sub Saharan Africa 200 million hours per day / this surpasses the total daily work hours of all individuals in the UK Universal access to clean cooking could save women 40 hours a week on average 3.7% of women’s jobs are more likely to be replaced by AI compared to 1.4% of men’s - need to focus on education, training, and market responsibilities The gender gap in internet use could cost low and middle income countries up to USD 500 million over the next five years Climate change may push up to 158.3 million more women and girls into extreme poverty 2 in 3 countries say they support gender data, but only 1 in 3 fund gender data collection Read more here on the research and the actions that we can take on micro, mean and macro levels —-> https://lnkd.in/eeKcHasu

📢 A major hurdle that we need to overcome as a global society (on all micro, meso and macro levels) in order to achieve gender equality, according to UN Women, is the "lack of women in leadership" (2023). 📣 Leadership has long been associated with masculinity, with men being perceived as more effective leaders, even by women (Biddle, 2018). More resilient and effective workplaces and societies necessitate a better balance between traditionally masculine and feminine leadership traits. So, what are those feminine leadership traits? And what is 'feminist leadership'? What are other relevant leadership theories that need to be considered? And what tools can woman use to become the very best leaders they can be, with organisations adapting to facilitate such? Join Charlotte Hill (夏 洛特), Maria Mulla and me at an A Mindful Lawyer event on 16 October, kindly hosted at Penningtons Manches Cooper LLP - 'The Impact of Female Leadership: Theories, Traits & Tools'. Secure your exclusive spot at the seminar here: https://lnkd.in/e9KpXKSa Some further reasons why you ought to attend..?! The 2024 World Economic Forum 'Global Gender Gap Report' has confirmed: 😱 The global gender gap in 2024 is 68.5% meaning 31.5% of the gap remains unaddressed. At the current rate, it will take 134 years to reach gender parity globally. Women account for less than a quarter of C-suite roles globally - and this has dropped to 36.4% of 'leadership' roles globally, from 37.5% in 2023. According to LinkedIn data - men have not only larger, but stronger networks than women online. There is a gender gap in perceived opportunities to acquire the skills of the future. ♀ Let's support breaking down systemic inequalities together. #FemaleLeadership #GenderEquality #GenderEquity #OptimisingPotential #AMindfulLawyer #PMC

Don’t be afraid to take risks. You can experiment, move firms, move jurisdictions, go in-house, take those extra weeks of maternity leave. Your career is long, so don’t feel that you need to reach a destination and enjoy the journey! We love this advice from our September Monday Monthly Member Lucy Pert of Co-Head of the Commercial Disputes Team at Hausfeld’s. If you would like to be featured as our MMM, or nominate a friend or colleague, please get in touch with our Publicity Secretary Ilana Baines at ibaines@pcb-byrne.com.

Deborah Glassbrook and Phoebe W. are thrilled to announce the rather exciting collaboration with Penningtons Manches Cooper LLP and A Mindful Lawyer to facilitate Beyond International Women's Day: A Leadership Workshop, on 30 April. Too many women across the world face inequalities that prevent them from being the very best that they deserve to be. Women also face unique challenges and pressures - globally, and here in the UK. In order for societies, communities and workplaces to thrive, we need equity and equality. We need all genders to be committed to this transformation. We need all leaders to be committed to this transformation. And when we say 'leaders' - we mean you. When we talk about ‘leader’ it is not just in a traditional position of power such as a partner, rather you as an individual, as a leader, in your daily lives – you as an individual with the ability to use your own influence and make an effective difference. This event is open to any gender. The objective of this workshop is to: provide you with tools to feel and be more resilient, empowered and self-assured, to go forward in tackling systemic inequalities day-to-day at micro and meso levels, to contribute to tackling gender inequality. We want to support you to further identify and harness your authentic selves. You will be supported to rethink your self-limiting beliefs, improve stakeholder management and identify impactful and sustainable strategies to optimise your potential. Secure your place at the Leadership Workshop here: https://lnkd.in/e5_8hdNY Thank you to Charlotte Hill (夏 洛特) and Maria Mulla! #OP #OptimisingPotential #genderequality #AMindfulLawyer #PMC

  • Our co-founder Phoebe W., Director of Optimising Potential has written an article for The Global Legal Post for International Women's Day. P opines: "While I am a strong proponent of IWD and recognising the ongoing challenges that women continue to face and the potential opportunities it provides, I see this period as a microcosm of the investment, support and celebration that are required to make the sustainable change that we deserve on micro, meso and macro levels – every day of the year. Clarifying and communicating purpose can be built into personal and professional strategies to effect positive and long-lasting change." Two highlights of my career so far are winning Management Today's 35 Women Under 35 Awards, in 2021 and 2023. These Awards have sought to recognise, reward and celebrate the achievements of women who are reshaping the business landscape, particularly in the early stages of their careers. Here I can be seen last year surrounded by totally incredible females in the winners' photoshoot. Now, I am thrilled to be a Judge (very much still under 35 😂!!) for the Awards. MT has today published an article on what what it takes to maximise your chances of winning. Amongst other questions, I was asked 'what aspect of a candidate's entry resonates with you most, and why?': “The 'je ne sais quoi' for me can be most closely described as seeing a true, fiery curiosity. A curiosity that catalyses a determination to challenge systemic inequalities related to gender across industries.” The final deadline for entries to the Awards is fast approaching (14 March). Still time to apply or nominate on MT's website. #femaleleadership #OptimisingPotential #MT35Under35 Optimising Potential, The Female City Supper Club, The Female Fraud Forum
