AFI scientists have developed a new, highly innovative imaging technique! This new imaging approach makes it possible to analyze the spatial connections between bacteria, including the strength of adhesive forces that hold them together. Adhesion is of fundamental importance in microbial biofilms subject to flow, such as those in the mouth. Working on this project are AFI researchers Dr. Pu-Ting Dong, Dr. Gary Borisy, Dr. Xuesong He, and Dr. Wenyuan Shi. Read all about it in our press release: https://lnkd.in/eB7dYqzG

🎥🦷🦠Ever wondered what’s in your plaque? These super-fast-dividing bacteria, called Corynebacterium matruchotii, shown multiplying over the course of 23.5 hours, cultivate the sticky plaque that causes cavities. These bacteria use a rare type of simultaneous cell division to make up to 14 new cells at once. This finding was reported in an NIDCR-funded study in PNAS from researchers at The ADA Forsyth Institute & Marine Biological Laboratory.
