Enhancing Support for Victims of Violence in Djibouti In the regions of Djibouti, women who were victims of violence did not have access to local support mechanisms. In addition to the pain they endured, they had to bear the costs of traveling to the capital to receive assistance. In some cases, particularly with sexual violence, the diagnosis became less reliable due to the time elapsed before receiving care. In collaboration with the USAID project, the National Union of Djiboutian Women (UNFD) initiated the process of re-operationalizing regional offices for victim support. The project first equipped these offices and recruited focal points in each region. To adequately prepare them, the UNFD, in partnership with the project, organized a training session on the mechanism for victim support for the staff of the CEIO in Djibouti and the local offices. Hasna, one of the participants, admitted that she was unaware of the existence of a multisectoral mechanism for victim support, which will greatly facilitate her assistance to victims. Meanwhile, the trainer, Mrs. Saharla Hassan, stated that the training helped identify, strengthen, and assess the future needs of the CEIO staff and local offices in the context of victim support. #Djibouti #VictimSupport #USAID #UNFD

The Ministry of Women and Family organizes a National Conference on Women’s Participation in Peacebuilding in Djibouti in collaboration with USAID Djibouti, June 20, 2024 - The Ministry of Women and Family, in partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), organized a national conference on the role of Djiboutian women in the promotion and consolidation of peace. This event is part of the implementation of the National Strategy on Women, Peace, and Security adopted by Djibouti in 2017, making Djibouti the first IGAD member state to transpose the regional action plan to the national level. The National Conference, held in Djibouti City, brought together representatives from various sectors, including government officials, civil society leaders, and international partners. It revolved around four main panels: “National Action Plan: Achievements and Challenges,” which highlighted the progress made and challenges faced; “Women’s Leadership, From Yesterday to Today,” illustrated by the sharing of personal experiences of Djiboutian women leaders; the panel “Innovative Approaches to Peacebuilding,” which explored innovative initiatives by women to promote peace; and finally, the panel “Youth Contributions to Sustaining Peace,” which engaged young people in exploring their role in sustaining peace and promoting a culture of peace. In the coming days, the Ministry of Women and Family will conduct awareness and training workshops in the interior regions, aimed at strengthening the capacities of local women leaders. These workshops will address several key themes, including awareness of early warning mechanisms, community engagement, and peacebuilding practices, among others. These sessions will increase awareness of the causes of conflicts, enhance the communication and advocacy skills of participants, and promote local peacebuilding initiatives. Madame Mouna Aden, Minister of Women and Family, stated that this initiative reflects the Ministry’s commitment to promoting the inclusion of women in peace processes and strengthening their role in conflict prevention and resolution. She emphasized that with the support of their partners, particularly USAID, the Ministry continues to make progress towards sustainable results and enhanced equality for Djiboutian women. USAID also welcomed this collaboration, highlighting the importance of women’s empowerment for long-term stability and prosperity.

USAID Partners with AFEPE to Enhance Marine Protection in Djibouti Djibouti has made significant strides in ocean protection, particularly through the establishment of marine protected areas (MPAs). One notable initiative is the creation of the Djibouti Marine Reserve, encompassing regions such as Ghoubbet al-Kharab and the Seven Brothers Islands. Building on this momentum, USAID collaborates with the Association des Femmes Engagées pour la Protection de l'Environnement (AFEPE) to develop an MPA in Tadjourah. This project aims to preserve the rich biodiversity of Tadjourah's coastal and marine ecosystems, which include coral reefs and seagrass beds. Recently, AFEPE has been actively working on conservation efforts to protect endangered species and habitats, promote sustainable fishing practices, and enhance local community involvement in marine conservation. #Oceanday #CivilSociety #USAID #Djibouti

USAID supports a high-level workshop on the objectives of the Global Compact for Migration and Djibouti's national migration strategy. Djibouti, May 6, 2024 – The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) supported a pivotal workshop organized by the International Organization for Migration (IOM - UN Migration), in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior and the National Coordination Bureau for Migration (BCNM), aimed at discussing the objectives of the Global Compact for Migration (GCM) and the budgeted roadmap for Djibouti's national migration strategy. This workshop, held at the Palais du Peuple in Djibouti, brought together a diverse range of stakeholders, including government representatives, civil society actors, international organizations, and local experts. The primary goal was to enhance understanding of the GCM and present concrete plans for implementing the national migration strategy, considering the unique challenges and opportunities posed by migration in the Horn of Africa region. In his opening remarks, Djibouti's Minister of Interior, Mr. Said Nouh Hassan, emphasized the critical importance of engaging all stakeholders to ensure effective and sustainable actions in response to current migration challenges. Similarly, Mr. José Barahona, Resident Coordinator of the United Nations in Djibouti, highlighted regional geopolitical issues that require thoughtful consideration on how to make migration beneficial for all involved parties. Recommendations arising from this workshop include the need to mobilize additional financial resources, enhance collaboration with migrants' countries of origin, strengthen data collection to assess real impacts, and ensure dignified living conditions and adequate healthcare services for migrants. This event marks the inception of a series of sessions that will occur in the five regions within Djibouti impacted by migration, in partnership with IOM, local authorities, and civil society, supported by USAID's project to foster civil society engagement in the local development process. #migration
