  • If you're considering the federal market as your next big client, this is a must-read from our educational partner Auxo and team!

Intrapreneur, Change Agent, Government Business Specialist. Certified High Performance Coach. Let's grow, together.

💡 Is the federal market right for you? The aggravating answer is, it depends.  If you're on the edge of deciding whether or not to pursue (or continue to pursue federal), it's worth deep thought and consideration. It’s easy to see the allure—big contracts, market stability, and the chance to work on meaningful challenges. But here’s the thing: breaking into the federal market isn’t just about having a cool product or the right connections. It’s a long game that requires patience, resources, and a lot of strategic thinking. In fact, it might take 18-36 months just to land your first contract—and 5+ years to really gain traction. The journey is rarely straightforward. There are twists and turns, delays, and a lot of learning along the way. I have interacted with hundreds of companies early in their journey in federal. I have watched many succeed and many fail. Over time, when working with teams, I've become more adamant about having clarity on objectives before diving in.  The precursor to that is "does this even make sense to you?" It's striking how many companies have been at it for years and have never really thought about why they were doing it beyond the often false belief in market value and potential. If you're a consultant -- this exercise can really help shape a more successful client relationship! I think this conversation needs to happen more often. Consider this a call to action to those who are intimate with this space to help more teams think critically about their decision. My latest article has a long list of questions you should be considering, starting with the basics:  👉 Can my business survive without federal revenue for a few years? 👉 Am I ready to invest time and money in building relationships, navigating bureaucracy, and maybe even adjusting my business model? 👉 Do I have the bandwidth to actively engage in legislative discussions or committee hearings? And into some of the nitty gritty:  👉 Am I willing to adjust my business model to meet government expectations? 👉 Am I willing to align my goals with a partner’s to gain a foothold? 👉 Do I have the grit to stay in it for the long haul? I would love to see as many new entrants in this space as possible. I believe more diversity in our industrial base is critical to long term national security -- especially in today's geopolitical environment.  But not at the expense of your company's survival. So think hard, it's okay if the answer is "not us", or for many "not yet". And I'm rooting for you either way.  A strong domestic economy is still a check in the "win" column. If you're a yes, you'll be starting off more prepared to align your strategy for success. If you’re on the fence about working in this space, I hope this article helps you think through your next steps. You can find the link in the comments below! Anything I’m missing? Any advice for those just starting out? I always appreciate your comments and feedback! Megan VanHorn Haley Yeagley Auxo

  • Check out the article in the comment section below as it highlights the urgent need for the DoD to integrate U.S. tech startups more effectively, addressing barriers like outdated acquisition processes and the mismatch between hardware and software development cycles. Proposed reforms—streamlining accreditation, responsibly exporting older technologies, and designating clear leadership—offer startups a clearer path to rapidly transition innovations into operational use. This is an encouraging signal for defense tech startups: your contributions are increasingly recognized as vital to national security. With reforms on the horizon, the future holds promise for your technologies to play a mission-critical role in building a modern, agile defense force. Stay the course—change is coming. If you’re developing dual-use technology and want to bring your solutions to the government faster, reach out to The Outpost at hello@theoutpost.com. We specialize in helping innovators navigate the defense ecosystem and start winning contracts that matter. Your tech could be the next game-changer for national security—let us help you make it happen.
