  • This is a giant step in the right direction. Individuals with diverse abilities deserve a living wage. Thank you for creating this change and actually supporting inclusion in the workplace!

Finally. In a victory for inclusion, fairness and decency, the U.S. Department of Labor has proposed the elimination of paying subminimum wages to workers with disabilities. Under the subminimum wage, employers could pay people with a disability as little as 5 cents per hour The proposal would immediately halt the issuance of new certificates that permit employers to pay below minimum wage.
The rule would create a three-year transition period that would phase out the approximately 710 certificates currently held by employers. This new rule specifically targets Section 14(c) of the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938, which currently allows employers to pay certain workers with disabilities less than the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. Over the last seven years, John and I have been two of many, many working for this change. We have testified before Congress and held hundreds of conversations with legislators and their staffs. We have collaborated with the CEO Commission for Disability Employment and the National Down Syndrome Society to make this change a reality. Real change does not depend on individual heroes, but many rising up to demand justice. This is a victory for people with differing abilities and a victory for all Americans as we rid ourselves of an anachronistic practice that claimed to support people with disabilities but actually held them down. #subminimumwage #inclusion #inclusionmatters #downsyndrome #dei

CELEBRATING PWD This year's theme (International Day For Persons With Disabilities 3rd Dec); “Empowering Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive, Equitable, and Sustainable Future,” can be achieved by celebrating and supporting persons with disabilities every single day. This should also include full implementation of disability laws and regulations. "Disability is not a brave struggle or courage in the face of adversity. Disability is an art. It’s an ingenious way to live." – Neil Marcus The lives, aspirations, and challenges of persons with disabilities are not confined to a single day. PWDs live with systemic challenges and often face barriers in accessing education, employment, healthcare, and social activities. These challenges cannot be solved through annual observances alone; rather, they require a constant commitment to inclusive practices that are embedded into everyday operations and policies. For businesses, governments, and institutions, recognizing this is the first step toward transforming PWDs' lives from an issue of social responsibility to an issue of rights and empowerment. Accessibility is not a privilege; it is a right. Disability:IN National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) Harun M.
