📢 We're thrilled to announce that our community guidelines are finally here! Like everything else at Thousand&One, it was really important to us to cocreate these #guidelines with our #community members. During our inaugural quarterly #meetup in June, and in collaboration with our guest speaker Sapna Agarwal from Woodlands Community, we led an interactive ideation session to explore 3 key questions: 1️⃣ What is your vision for what this community can be? 2️⃣ What community guidelines and #values are important to you within this space? 3️⃣ How do we want to show up for one another? The result? 7 terms of #engagement that govern how we show up in our community spaces. Dive into each one by visiting our website: https://lnkd.in/edb6u2af

We’ve been reading 'How we Show Up' by Mia Birdsong, and we’ve found not just comfort, but also direction through the stories held in this book. As we head towards the final month of 2024, we carry within our minds, hearts, and bodies so much grief, rage, and anger. More than ever before, we’re reminded of the importance of community and in finding ways to connect and reconnect with those around us. And yet, as Birdsong reminds us, often in the face of racist, patriarchal, and colonial systems of violence, our first instinct is to build walls. Maybe it's how we cope, or grieve. Or perhaps, maybe we simply don’t have the right tools. In the darkest of times, we know that our only way out is love. The radical love that bell hooks imagined for us. The one that rests on the pillars of our collective. This moment demands from us new skills. We must learn how to hold each other. But we’re also learning that it’s okay to ask to be held. 'How we Show Up' is about exactly this. Through research and personal stories, Birdsong gives us insight into what ‘showing up’ means – what it looks like to turn up, to bear witness, to be vulnerable, to ask for help, and to be accountable. #Community #WomenofColour #Love #Accountability #CollectiveLiberation

Our ‘In Focus’ interviews feature Women of Colour across different industries and geographies who share their experiences, challenges, and strategies on how to thrive in the workplace. In the past, we have interviewed women who have given us a sneak peak into their work and what inspires it, along with some of the barriers that they had to overcome to get to where they are today. From the award-winning architect Safoura Zahedi whose work is deeply rooted in Islamic architecture and geometry, to the incredible oral historian Fanny Julissa García, MA who documents the lived experiences of immigrants from Central America, these women are trailblazers who are paving the path for future generations. As we look to 2025, we are looking for other Women of Colour who would like to share their story with us. Tag them below, repost to share this call for interviews with your network, or email us at hello@thousandone.org to get the ball rolling. We are so excited to be partnering with Climate Sirens, Community Care Collective, and Politics4Her to co-facilitate a Feminist Healing Circle for activists from the SWANA (South West Asia and North Africa) region. Our communities have endured over a year of climate disasters, genocides, wars, and systemic oppression, but without adequate support for emotional healing and sharing. Here's our attempt to change that, details ⬇️ 📅 November 25, 2024 ⏱️ 1:30 PM EST / 6:30 PM GMT 📍Sign up here: https://shorturl.at/aPWcH #Healing #Community #SWANA
The SWANA (South West Asia and North Africa) region is currently facing climate disasters, genocides, wars, and systemic oppression. November 25th marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and the launch of the UNiTE campaign – an initiative of 16 days of activism that concludes on December 10, commemorating International Human Rights Day. In partnership with Community Care Collective, Politics4Her, and Thousand&One, Climate Sirens is excited to invite you to a feminist healing circle for activists from the SWANA region, featuring emotional release exercises, guided healing meditation, live music performances, and Q&A with artists. Our team recently participated in Solidarity Is, a program by the Building Movement Project, and it was magical. 6 weeks of hands-on learning, led by knowledgeable and compassionate facilitators who pushed our thinking on what it means to be in #solidarity with one another and how to envision our #collective future. A key learning from the cohort we want to share with you is the difference between an ally and a co-conspirator. This quote from Bettina Love's book "We want to do more than survive" really resonated with us: "Allies know all the language, they’ve read all the books, they come to the meeting with all the terms. To be a co-conspirator is to take risks for somebody. To put something on the line. When you’re using your privilege, use it. And I’m not just talking about white folks, I’m talking about cisgender folks. Use it for Trans folks. Use it for Queer folk. Put something on the line. Take a risk." And so: ✨ Who are the co-conspirators you can name in your #community? ✨ How can you begin to take steps that go beyond #allyship? ✨ How will you utilize your privilege and positionally? ✨ Are you ready to put something on the line?

This November, we’re observing #Transgender Awareness Month along with #Islamophobia Awareness Month. Over the last few years we’ve witnessed a spike in both anti-Trans and anti-Muslim hate. We’ve watched a continuous cycle of violence against Trans and Muslim bodies, and we’ve seen our government officials codify these forms of hate in their laws again, and again. For us at Thousand&One, our commitment to Women of Colour has always been underpinned by the intersections of our diverse identities, and this month, we’re thinking about both our Trans and Muslim communities as we honour the interconnectedness of our experiences under transphobic and racist systems. Join us in celebrating and supporting Queer Trans woman Amina Maher in her transition. Donate to her fundraiser and share it with your networks!

In her article "Safe and Brave Spaces Don’t Work (and What You Can Do Instead)", Elise Ahenkorah, award-winning global speaker and founder of inclusion FACTOR, writes about why safe and brave spaces simply don't work. Safe spaces fail to consider that it is impossible to guarantee complete safety due to the unpredictable nature of people's behaviours and actions. Brave spaces negate the daily bravery marginalized communities need to display to navigate workplaces and society. So what's the alternative? Accountable spaces: ⭐ Place an equal amount of onus for all to behave equitably and inclusively to foster a deeper understanding of diverse lived experiences, in real time. ⭐ Create an opportunity for everyone in the discussion to challenge the conditions that are oppressing marginalized communities by demonstrating accountable and equitable behaviours and actions. ⭐ Are rooted in intent and impact to promote actions, thoughts, and behaviours that are equitable and inclusive of marginalized communities. Check out the link in comments to learn more about Elise's guidelines for accountable spaces. #Community #Inclusive #Oppression #Accountability #Equity
