A huge congratulations to Emergent Risk International and INTELAB Ventures for hosting such a fantastic inaugural #I3Summit! The volume and caliber of #intelligence professionals from all different industries, backgrounds, and both the public and private sector demonstrated that even one of the oldest and most established professions is ripe for innovation and reimagining. Thank you to Meredith Wilson and Ryan Long, JD for the opportunity to design and lead a workshop on 'Reimagining the Future Intelligence Workplace' - from how and where folks work and why they show up - and a special thanks to my facilitating partner Arian Avila for the partnership and to Capital One for hosting in such a collaborative space. Keynote lectures are insightful and thought-provoking, but the most innovative (and applicable) ideas always come from the folks on the ground, doing the work day-in and day-out. It's amazing to see what's possible when you step aside and give them the podium and the permission to break the norm and redesign a work model that works for them and their clients. #futureofwork #organizationaldevelopment #culturetransformation #teambuilding #security

  • Tomorrow's Office is... actively engaged. A 2020 study on businesses role in civic engagement by the Harvard Ash Center showed that consumers want businesses to play a more active role in society — and that employees want to work for companies doing so. #civicengagement #culture #futureofwork #vote #employeeengagement

Civic engagement IS employee engagement. 🗳️ Companies who actively support civic participation enjoy higher employee morale and positive reputations - attracting new talent who prioritize ethical and socially responsible employers. Kudos to the companies who: 👏 Have policies protecting employees right to take time off to vote without impact their PTO or sick leave 👏 Actively promote civic participation by sharing registration deadlines, polling locations and alternative ways of voting 👏 Strategically schedule their meetings and work approach on voting days to make it even easier for employees to participate without stress It's not too late ❗ Managers and Leaders: check in with your folks today and make sure everyone has the opportunity and a plan to vote. Offer resources if they need additional support. Creating a culture where you value people's voices being heard and intentionally create time and space for them to do so isn't political - It's smart business strategy with a measurable impact on employee satisfaction and engagement. Go vote. Encourage your employees to vote. Celebrate the privilege of a fair and free process to determine how we live - and create a workplace where individuals feel they can use their voice to affect positive change for how we work too. #culture #vote #voting #employeeengagement #positiveworkplace

The stress of parenting is a public health concern. This is a profound statement from a sitting Surgeon General, an acknowledgement likely long awaited by many parents who live this reality, but not quite as profound as the data that backs it up: 🔺 Parents are nearly twice as likely (48%) to report feeling completely overwhelmed by stress on most days compared to other adults (26%). 🔺 Parents are working AND caring more for their children today than they did a decade ago, translating to forgoing rest, personal relationships and leisure (which translates to mental health decline.) 🔺 Parents today live in the shadow of social media and always-on culture, creating endless comparisons of our child-rearing "performance" in every category - from your child's education, diet and nutrition, youth sports, what they wear, and relationship to screens. As of this past April, data shows that of the 83.3 million families in the U.S., 80.2% of them have at least one family member in the workforce. What does this mean for companies? Dr. Murthy writes, "It begins with fundamentally shifting how we value parenting, recognizing that the work of raising a child is crucial to the health and well-being of all society." Core foundational solutions required include: 🔸 Paid parental leave 🔸 Generous sick leave 🔸 Childcare credits and subsidies But here's the big cultural shift that will do more to support your organization's parents than any premium benefit: 🔷 Reasonable flexibility to optimize time for both professional and parenting success AND 🔷 An achievable workload, i.e. a paid workload that acknowledges and reflects the unpaid time and labor of parenting. That's it. The best part is that both of these things have been shown to have the added bonus of higher productivity and lower attrition of your top employees who are healthier, less stressed and more engaged. Even BETTER? Both these things improve outcomes for ALL employees - whether or not they're a parent. Healthy, successful kids become your future talent and customers. We need healthy and engaged parents to help get them there. And being an organization that supports parents' success and wellbeing is easier than you think. #culture #workingparents #workingcaregivers #flexibility #futureofwork

When deciding on the name and branding for Tomorrow's Office, it was important to me for it to reflect the vision that inspired it. I went back and forth on the standard "Jessica Martinez Consulting" to keep it simple (yet boring), to the completely obscure "Petting Zoo" (I have a saying about zoos and courage - ask my former teammates Rex Luther and Michael Fenton!) After many dog walks where I always do my best thinking, I landed on Tomorrow’s Office. 🔸 Tomorrow: a perpetual future. Something always ahead of us, full of possibility and opportunity, and a symbol for what’s new and next. 🔸 Office: the original icon for work and professional life - and one that is at the center of the disruption of the traditional work model by the next generation. From a design perspective, I knew the branding had to be font-centric. I am OBSESSED with fonts (ask other former teammates Erika Harley and Tirrill Black, who had way more meetings with me about serifs than they signed up for 😬. ) It had to be a mixture of typefaces: something polished and professional, feminine and artistic, and an undeniable homage to a classic symbol of the OG office: the typewriter. For the core colors, I leaned into hues that felt as timeless as tomorrow - a sandy taupe and warm black - with accents like forest and fluorescent green, a power red and baby blue, plus lavender. All reflecting the attributes I see defining the future of work: sustainable, tech-forward, balanced, and representatively filled with women, caregivers and other under-recognized voices. This icon, though, took both a lot of time and no time at all to finish. After weeks of going back and forth on options ranging from imagery only to every iteration of the arrow (pointing to the future), I once again went on a walk at 5:30am with my two unwieldy rescue dogs and had clarity: The ellipsis. While it’s predominant use in the English language is to indicate the omission of superfluous information, it can also be used to indicate an unfinished thought - a continuation… And it became clear. To… 🔹 To: ‘T’ for Tomorrow and ‘O’ for Office But also 🔹 To: expressing motion or approaching a particular condition - in this case, the future, better careers, and better lives. 🔹 And an ellipsis - to be continued - not at the bottom but at the top, because we’re only headed forward and upwards from here. Endless gratitude for the creative partnership and beautiful talent of my designer, Bethany Adam, who expertly captured my ramblings in these visuals. • Disrupting the traditional workplace model means giving up outdated practices that only give the illusion of value at the cost of productivity and employee morale. Define what matters most and stop any activities that aren't moving you towards those goals - and watch what's possible!

Looking to be more productive and less stressed? Consider the 1x1 challenge. Pick (1) pain point and stop it for (1) month. We all have that ONE thing that feels like the 150lb backpack on our trek up the mountain: 🔹 The meeting that you endlessly dread 🔹 The report that takes countless hours to complete but you aren't really sure how it's used or if it's helpful to the audience 🔹 The regular newsletter or email that requires a significant amount of effort and coordination with no understanding of whether or not people read it. Give it up for one month and see what happens. How is your or others' success impacted? Does it create any new issues for the team? Is workflow or communication disrupted? Are people clamoring for you to bring it back? How do YOU feel and what else have you been able to accomplish? If there is no impact to it's absence, get rid of it. The task or meeting was performative at best, but more likely harmful to your team's morale and productivity. Impactful change almost always requires you to give something up. Yet there is a powerful resistance to letting go what has 'always been' out of fear of looking less relevant, valuable or visible. The truth is there is so much untapped potential in bravely asking the question, "But what would happen if we STOPPED?" (*Featured below is my super organized, color-coded family white board that took me hours to do and NO one in my family even looked at it. Not every member of my family can even read yet, ha - but creating this calendar made me FEEL productive. So I took the 1x1 challenge and gave it up. Notice the month... I haven't even bothered to wipe it down, that's how much I gave it up!) #culture #productivity #performativetasks #busyness #burnout #change #transformation #futureofwork
